The PS3 launched in November 2006, although the PlayStation 3 had a bumpy first year but has gone on to become an incredible gaming machine that has matched Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and has changed consoles for the better.

Sony’s PS3 has three features that will make it well worth purchasing: An incredible variety of game types, superior hardware allowing for unchallenged graphics and audio and also includes a built in Blu-ray player.

Whether you have just recently purchased a PS3 or you’re considering buying one, this guide will quickly bring you up to speed on what you are purchasing and what games are right for you.
This guide will help you set up your PS3 and how to get online.

[Multipage=Getting Started]

When purchasing a PlayStation 3, you’ll need to decide just which version is suited for you whether it is the “fat” version or the “slim”. When you purchase a PS3 there could be some extra items you might need to purchase from a store.

What to Buy?

Sony now offers two versions of the PlayStation 3. There are no real differences between the fat PS3 and the slim version except for the amount of gigs the PS3 has. The less expensive includes 120 GB hard while the more expensive version uses a 250 GB.

Although, this sounds like a lot of space and how could you possibly fill it? Don’t forget the PlayStation store contains thousands of downloadable games and downloadable content. When you purchase a game it will install onto your hard drive so that the game can run better. So the space will quickly fill up.

Good news everyone! The PS3 is compatible to other external hard drives! So you always have the option to connect a bigger hard drive if you ever happen to run out of space.

Composite AV cable (for old TVs)
USB cable
Some specially marked boxes include an HDMI cable

[Multipage=Optional Items]

While the PS3 comes with everything a home owner and gamer could ask for, there are a few additional items you may want to purchase. For some of you these items won’t be necessary but have a look just in case.

HDMI Cable: The majority of PS3s only come with composite cables, which are only useful if you have a really old TV. If you've purchased a flat-screen TV in the past five years, chances are you have at least one HDMI port. Don't be tricked into purchasing an "official" HDMI cable. Any standard (AKA cheap) HDMI cable will do the trick.

Headset: The PS3 is compatible with Bluetooth headsets. If you use a Bluetooth headset with your phone, then you're already set. There are some headset options you can find where you purchase your PS3, and any of these should do. But if none of them strike your fancy, you can hunt for a Bluetooth earpiece elsewhere. You only need a headset if you plan to play online games.

Remote Control: Most TVs, satellite dish systems, VCRs, and DVD players use infrared sensors to receive information from remote controls. PS3 does not have an IR sensor, meaning that most universal remotes won't work with it. Only Bluetooth remotes work with the PS3. While there are Blu-ray menu controls on the standard
DualShock 3 controller, they are clunky. If you prefer to use a more traditional-looking remote control, you'll need to either purchase a

Bluetooth remote (there are some official PS3 remotes) or an adapter that can be plugged into the front of your PS3 to receive an IR signal.

PlayStation Eye: One of Sony's best additions to the PS3, the PlayStation Eye is a camera and microphone that can sit on top of or below your TV. The Eye can be used for video chat with friends or to play a variety of games. It's more noteworthy use is with Singstar. As you play, the Eye records your performance, which you can then upload online and share with friends. The Eye is only as valuable as the games you'll use it for. We don't recommend picking one up until after you've settled in with your PS3 and have a good idea of the types of games you enjoy most.

[Multipage=Setting Up]

Setting up your PS3 is incredibly simple and booting up your system is very quick and easy to do.

Connect Your System

There isn’t that much to do really, especially if you own a newer TV. Setting up is that easy there is only FOUR steps!

    If you are using an HDMI cable, put one end into the back of your tV and the other into your PS3.

    Plug the power cord into the back of the PS3 and then into a surge protector (this is recommended) or a wall socket.

    Connect your USB cable to the back of your Dualshock 3 controller (or your sixaxis controller) and the other end into your PS3.

    Press the power button on the back (for fat PS3’s or near the disc drive for Slim PS3’s)

Create a User

The very first time you turn your PlayStation 3 on, you’ll get a notice telling you to create your very own user profile. This profile will be used to create your PS3 settings and can be used to be your very own FREE PlayStation account.

You can create up to 16 different accounts to be stored on your PS3 and all using different user profiles and online names.

After you’ve created a profile you’ll be dropped into the PS3’s main menu, now known as Xross Media bar (XMB). If it is your very first time this could be daunting and maybe a bit difficult to find what your after.

When you first connect online you will prompted to download the latest system update every now and again Sony will release an update which you will have to download, this will only take a few minutes. If this is your first time be patient and just follow what the instructions say on the screen.

PlayStation Network

When you sign into your PSN you now have some very cool feature here, you can edit your online settings e.g. your avatar and a certain colour for your name, you can gain access to the PlayStation store, or go to the PlayStation Home if you choose to download it.

To change your Avatar and a personalized background for your name select Account Management then go to Account Information everything should be in there.

Settings

This is likely to be the most important tab on your XMB. Here the PS3 shows a vast number of settings that you can access and change to enhance your experience.

[Mutipage=PlayStation Move]

In September thousands of European PlayStation fans are awaiting the release of the PlayStation Move, to be released on September 15th while being released a few days later on the 19th for the North Americans.

The original PS3 SixAxis controller has motion sensing but don’t let this fool you, the PlayStation is so much more than that.
Using the PlayStation eye, your PS3 sees you moving a wand with an orb on the end of it (the PlayStation Move Controller) that now allows you to use this for most of your favourite games. You aim in your favourite shooters such as the Call of Duty franchise; paint on your TV screen and perform incredible archery tricks.

This is one-for-one stuff, so when you swing your arm to the right, your onscreen character should follow suit. The precision and responsiveness is why so many people are excited for the controller.

Three games that will be compatible with the PlayStation Move are:

Every PS3 has Wi-Fi enabled, this means that you can connect to the internet from a wireless router. If you don’t want it to be wireless you can use a Ethernet cable and connect it to the back of your PS3 if you want to use a wired connection.

You can set up your PS3 connection very easily by going to the settings tab and scrolling down until you reach “Network Settings” then going to Internet Connection settings. Here you can choose just what type of connection you are using. If you are using a wired connection then you have it easier then the wireless users as the PS3 will do everything for you.

You must login or register to view this content.

If you are using a wireless connection, it is easier to choose the Scan option as it will find all nearby Wi-Fi offerings so you can choose your router. Select your routers name. Likely your security setting is called a WPA on the PS3 but if you know you are using a “WEP” (this offers extra wireless security) select that option. If your router has a password you’ll need to enter this password to connect to your router.

To set up your PSN Account, getting online with your PlayStation is free which gives the PS3 an advantage when it comes to their competition. To set up your very own account, scroll to the “PlayStation Network” tab then choose “Sign up for PLAYSTATION Network” from here you will be guided on how to do to create your account.
