With heavy rivalry between Sony and Apple on handheld gaming, the next PSP will be designed with touch screen controls. Many gamers will be upset while others will be delighted. The touch screen control system makes it harder to play full on 3D 'complete' games. Indie developers run rife on iPod at the moment. The new PSP will have more computing power than the iPod and so I expect we will see professional games from professional studios.

Since it's in heavy rivalry, I assume we will also see exclusives and the porting of some current iPhone apps to PSP. Myself, I would have preferred the analog stick as it allows for greater depth of control, the PSP has always been a handheld console for the core gamer and it seems Sony are changing this. Nevertheless, I assume we can see higher quality games on the iPhone in any case. It'll be interesting to see how games such as God Of War and Metal Gear Solid face touch screen controls.

The New PSP is rumoured to release in late 2011 so the image here is most likely a prototype.

by the way the rumors are that the psp 2 will have touch controls on the back (similar to the backflip)! not the front and that it is roughly the same size a the psp 3000 but without a umd drive.

i hope not, gaming on iphone isnt that good

Since when was Apple a serious competitor in the gaming industry? iPad? Sure it plays games, but gaming in the iPad isn't really what it's known for. It's more of a tech accessory if you will.

yeah the PSP was always a little more hardcore and not so much like the iTouch. Would be cool to have touchscreen for things like PS Minis but I would still want real games. How the hell do you play SOCOM with touchscreen?
