<font face="verdana" color="black"> As I'm sure most of you already know, VALVe have turned to PS3's side, the majorly successful SteamWorks distribution system will be usable when Portal 2 releases on PS3 (confirmed that it will among with SteamWorks on PS3). Steam is run by the company VALVe who has made 'Team Fortress 2', Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Half-Life 2 (thought by many to be the best game ever made), Portal and many other classic games. This means several things, VALVe is finally warming up to PS3

!
Anyway, onto the news. I hear some of you asking, but what
is Steam? Steam is a digital distribution system that has literally revolutionised PC gaming (one of the 5 times or so VALVe's managed to (talking about gaming in general here)). You can buy games on it and directly download them, however, we can already do this on PS3. You also play the games you have bought from Steam within Steam. You access servers through it, you talk to friends (cross-game chat with one other person is possible). VALVe provide their 'VAC' (Valve Anti Cheat) system that permanently bans hackers. Steam also automatically updates your games and creates a 'cloud' space for your game saves, game settings and control schemes. Steam also provides updates. This basically means that your progress in the game is stored online and you can continue directly from it on another PS3 or, as VALVe is considering, a PC! Some of these features are already on the PS3 or would be unnecessarily implemented. Here's what VALVe might do, some of it is hinted officially by VALVe while other parts of it are thought of by internet members.
1. Cross-Platform Play:

Valve mentioned at Gamescon recently that they were interested in the possibility of cross PS3-PC play. This could mean talking and playing with your steam-buddies on your PS3.
This would be incredible. All VALVe games currently on PS3 are significantly behind PC games of the same nature due to sets of updates, we could potentially see these updates make games that are averagely good on PS3 (such as Team Fortress 2) into the literally mouthwatering PC games due to incredible updates.
2. PC <-> PS3 Cloud Functions:

Imagine you saved the game at level X, turn off your PS3, go to your friends place and continue playing on his PC or PS3 from where you left off on your PS3 or PC (because your save is on the steam cloud and can be read by the PC version and vice versa). Pretty awesome, huh?
3. Cheaper PS3 Games:

Every time you buy a game through the Steam-PS3 platform, you might get the PC version as well. Imagine how awesome this would be. Don't know whether to chose the PS3 or PC version of Portal 2? Well, you don't have to decide anymore, because when you buy one, you get the other for free. Think about it: this is a great service to fans, and Valve won't be losing anything since hardly anyone would buy two versions of the same game.
This is good news, since PC games are cheaper than PS3 games. This could potentially be a gap in the market, although it would make sense since it costs money to put games onto Blu-Ray discs and ship them in cases with manuals. This money is unnecessary to spend so prices would be cheaper.
4. Left 4 Dead + Left 4 Dead 2 -> PS3
VALVe's heart has warmed to PS3. Left 4 Dead is an exclusive game to Xbox and PC due to VALVe's own personal choice. Microsoft didn't pay them anything to keep it that way. VALVe have considered making it for PS3 but have turned it down so far, they've welcomed the Macintosh into Steam and are giving them Left 4 Dead too, Mac was previously just as shunned as the PS3. Since VALVe may allow you to share the games on your account, all current players of L4D on PC would get free copies of it for PS3!
I don't know about you, but I'm very excited about this! Portal 2 will be a great game as well.
Please note: none of these features have been confirmed for PS3 SteamWorks when it ships with Portal 2 on February 9th 2011 however I wouldn't be surprised if the bulk of them happened!
