If you ask any young footballer what he wants to be when he’s older, you’re most likely to be told a similar answer that children around the world would also choose: Strikers. Everyone wants the glory of putting the ball in the back of the net and winning the game for your team.

However, the developers of EA must of not heard correctly as last year at gamescom they announced that FIFA 11 will have the ability to play full 11 players per side online and offline but who wants to be stood around for 90 minutes waiting to hopefully be a hero? Players that do decide to put on the gloves for their team will be given new tools to keep the game fresh and keep it interesting.

The first of these features is a real time set of hot indicators, which will show the player the recommended standing position for your goalie, and a guide to all incoming shots , although it may sound like being a goal keeper will be easy, however, offensive players will still have the ability to chip you and curl the ball past you. There is also no way to tell how hard they will hit the ball until it has left their boot. Players steer the keeper by using the left stick like you would for an out-field player, while keeping the ball out of your net can be done with the right stick or with a single button press in “simplified mode.”

The other new tool is called “Call to Arms,” which is a raised view of the field when yourside has the ball and is setting up an attack. As the goal keeper, you will have the ability to call for players to pass the ball and set up plays with single button presses forced over the players that have the ball and the ones that are setting up the attack.

FIFA 10 promised an improved level of physicality to play, and while it managed to deliver as players jostled for possession, FIFA 11 takes it a step further with the chance to barge and hold players even if they don’t have the ball. A little bit of nudge in backplay may provide you with just the window you need to make a clean break from the player marking you.

FIFA 11 also adds learning AI to its list of awesome new features, where as in FIFA 10 the CPU could not use skill moves, in FIFA 11 you have the option to teach the CPU your favourite skill moves which is done by recording a sample of your player showing off on the pitch and then analysing the performance for future games.

A new video tool also allows players to view, adjust, and edit their own highlights packages, saving them to the console’s hard drive for showing someone who missed out on seeing your performance live, or rubbing it in the face of your deflated opposition. The World Cup may be over for another four years, but plenty of people are still running a temperature with football fever.

FIFA 11 will be hitting the stores in late September this year. I’m sure many of us will be itching to put on our boots and hit the grass when it is released.
