Bungie said it was going to penalise cheats in Halo: Reach and has made good on that promise by resetting the credits of roughly 15,000 Halo: Reach players already. In addition, the studio has also applied a one day credit earning ban on that same group of players, which Bungie has said is not necessarily an added punishment, but rather a measure "mostly to ensure that recipients receive an in-game notification of the action taken."

All 15,000 resets were actioned a few days ago, specifically targeting cheating players who employed "an exploit that allowed players to complete a Challenge 20+ times via intentional network manipulation (i.e., disconnects.)."

The post on Bungie.net's forums offers a stern warning to underhand players, as the developer refines its automated banning system: "A more comprehensive pass will be occuring in the coming week as our automated Banhammer mechanisms grow accurate enough to satisfy our high bar for burden of proof. If you are thinking about getting an easy 50k credits by using this exploit, I would strongly advise you to reconsider."

Punished players will be able to re-download their Legendary helmets if they lost them as a result of their credits being reset and their commendations won't be affected. Consider this a first strike for cheap players then, and confirmation that indeed, cheats never do prosper and never will as long as Bungie has got something to say about it.
