Overview: Have you ever wondered what a 2D version of God of War would be like? How about feeling like you just decapitated an entire army or people? Well for $15 you can experience all that and even more. This game was released in late August 2010 for the PlayStation Network and XBOX Live Arcade, being unnoticed for almost a month, people began downloading and playing this game. In fact it got so popular that Attack of the Show, on G4, featured it in one of their segments and even gave it a rating of 4 out of 5. Currently rated 4.75 on the PSN Network and XBOX Live Arcade by the thousand of users who have downloaded it, this game is another reason why these cheap half games are some of the best deals on the market.
Game Modes: In this game there are only two game modes, those being single player and multi-player. In single player you chronicle the life of a man named Shank who has had his life ripped out from under him when the mother of his unborn child is brutally murdered in front of him, essentially turning him into a man with literally nothing to lose. As you fight the common enemy's in this 2-D side scroller you work your way up to one of the four bosses, eventually leading up to the head honcho. The graphics in this game are truly amazing and completely expected from one of the creators of God of War, while playing you will unlock pieces of artwork (drawings) of the characters in action. Using many weapons in your arsenal (chainsaw, guns, swords, etc.) you will destroy, dismember, and beat them to a bloody pulp and then give them seconds. This game is the classic "get revenge... and so much more" scenario where a man who has nothing to lose kills any and everyone who has sneezed within a foot of him.
The other game mode is titled "multi-player", but what is really meant by that is "if your friend wants to play too" game mode. Despite it not having any special online feature that multi-player has an entirely different and new story line depicting what Shank's life was like before the original stroy. You fight side-by-side with your friend (future enemy) Dante who will help you take on hordes of grenade, sword, and gun wielding enemies looking to finally stop you both. It is basically a good overall game mode, but considering it is basically the same as single player with a new story and artwork I don't consider it anything special.
Downsides: Though there isn't an extravagant list of downsides for a $15 game there are a few notable ones, the first being that the controls can be a bit spotty at times. When attacking enemies at certain times the controls may have a lag feel to them making your moves happen after the fact, this is due to someone pressing a button a certain amount of times and the game actually doing it that many times. We get used to the fact that if you press a button 5 times in combat it will generally do that move once and respond to whatever button is pressed after the move is complete, this can cause a lot of problems such as throwing more then one of your very few grenades. Another problem is lack of checkpoints in the hard game mode of single player, as an attempt to seem more difficult. I fully understand wanting to make the game more difficult but considering it is pretty easy to be glitched into a continuous attack involving many enemies this completely ruins the mood to play, so much in fact that I have not been able to be the hard game mode yet.
Summary: Even after the above mentioned problems this game is still a very fun and addictive game, you will find yourself playing this for hours on end trying to make it to the end. My complete game time was a few minutes over 3 hours on the normal game mode, but once your done with that you still have a bunch of things to unlock and trophies to get. For this price you should feel like you just played the greatest 2D game ever because honestly nothing is better then then paying 1/4 of the price of a full game for single player and so much more. With the amazing cut-scenes and simple controls people of all ages should enjoy this game with ease. In my book this game is a must buy, because to miss out of this game for this price would NUCKING FUTS!!!
I've had it since it came out and it's pretty cool. The only thing i don't like is hard mode which has checkpoints disabled so if you get near the end and die your screwed.
