Writer's Note: Before writing this post, I'd like to be fairly honest with you all. When it comes to console / video capture jargon, I'm the last person to come to. Nonetheless, I do my best to bring you information concerning these types of things. Please excuse me if I misinterpret something. Of course, feel free to call me out on it, and I'll fix it ASAP.
It seems that the hacking community has done it again, this time in a way we see much less often. The recently released Kinect has already been hacked, but not in a way that's going to ruin / enhance anyone's experience. This is one of the few hacks that is, well... amusing.
UC Davis visualization researcher Oliver Kreylos, with the use of infrared and colored cameras, as well as a custom program, to create a stunning 3D virtual reality environment.
Here's Mr. Kreylos demonstrating the hack in realtime, all while explaining how it works:

This. Is. Amazing! I can't wait to see what people do with this system, If they are already putting things out like catching things in 3-D... That's just crazy!
i wonder if he would try to get another camera and put it on the other side... then he could capture it in full 360 degrees. that would be tight
