Activision’s yearly swap between developers Treyarch and Infinity Ward has this year fallen into the liable hands of Treyarch, who produced Call of Duty: World at War. Treyarch is surprised gamers with this installment to the series, throwing some of their own aspects into the game. From the implementation of interesting killstreaks, to the semi-return of vehicles, Treyarch has laid all their cards down, allowing for massive success, or utter failure.
Throughout the course of Black Ops’ campaign, you assume the role of various characters, as is traditional to the series. The characters available to you are members of a special forces team, of which go behind enemy lines and conduct secret missions. The campaign is much more in depth than Treyarch’s previous Call of Duty title, making the experience all the more enjoyable. Treyarch has enhanced the experience by making the campaign seem much more realistic, taking into account everything that is occurring while conducting missions. In Black Ops, you will see certain incidents from various points of view, rather than just one, making for an interesting experience, that allows players to see the effects of their own actions in previous levels. Additionally, the storyline occasionally adds elements into play, making for a more difficult experience where health isn’t the only matter of concern. Overall, the story is one of the best yet.
The foundation for the multiplayer in Black Ops is essentially the same, which was first introduced by Infinity Ward with their immensely successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Experience points (XP) and rewards remain a big role in the multiplayer experience. Treyarch has taken the system one step further, with upgradeable perks, clan tag and emblems on weapons, and even reticles on your weapon that can be modified. Players now get to experiment with various types of sights, including the reflex sight and adjustable zoom scope. Another large implementation is Treyarch’s new COD point system. Rather than unlocking attachments and perks for reaching certain ranks, you now merely save up COD points, and purchase them. However, unlocks of entire weapons continue to require players to get to a particular level. Some of the changes may take time to get used to for some gamers, and has received criticism by some of the more veteran Call of Duty gamers.
With the implementation of COD points comes Wager Matches. Rather than simply playing against your online friends for self pride, you can actually set a wager, allowing for a new level of competition and opportunities to show your skill. There are currently 4 types of Wager Matches:
One in the Chamer
Sticks and Stones
Gun Game
Sharpshooter
Additionally, there are three types of Wager Match Modes:
The well-known and widely liked zombie mode has returned in Black Ops, originally introduced by Treyarch in World at War, intended to add a new and small aspect of fun. After gaining so much momentum, zombies became the entire purpose of playing World at War for many gamers, henceforth its return. With new weapons, better zombie AI, and larger, more complicated maps, zombie lovers are sure to be pleased. You start with only one map, and can unlock a second by completing the story mode. You’ll find the second map to be quite amusing, but we’ll let you find that one out for yourselves.
At the end of the day Call of Duty: Black Ops lived up its expectations. Although various issues at launch led to bad servers and endless complaints, many gamers are still enjoying the game. With a strong story, solid zombie mode bound to provide players with hours on end of enjoyment, and a multiplayer that dared to take a step in its own direction, Black Ops is certainly a standalone title, which, like World at War, cannot be considered a spin-off of Infinity Ward’s previous title. If you’re a FPS fan looking to feed your addiction, Black Ops is certainly worth a look.
I, however, am unimpressed with Black Ops. It is most definitely a step back from MW2 in my mind. In comparison to MW2, BO is a step back graphically, weapons are bland, sound is terrible, and there are less weapon options (just 1 per shotgun attachment!) just to name a few things.
Obviously, this is just my opinion and most of you love BO (so don't flame me). MW2 had the chance to be even better, but Infinity Ward was basically dismantled so there wasn't much support for the community.
It is a sad thing for me that BO is doing so well. Seems like it doesn't really matter what Activision puts out, the masses will buy it. This is especially directed at PS3 owners. F' Treyarch and their lower resolution and botched multiplayer on PS3.
The following 2 users say thank you to giops3 for this useful post:
in my opinion BO weapons are borig, sound is terrible, and there are less weapon options just 1 per shotgun attachment :/ and the graphics /facepalm.. but i like the game its addictive!.. and more realistic where as mw2,, well your not gona be out in afganistan and u pull out a 1man army with danger close and noobtube across afghanistan now are you?!
Also the servers are pathetic on BO, but i still usually spen most of my time on the laptop and ps3 on Black ops Main menu!
Just to reiterate, I don't think BO is terrible, I just think it is a step back from MW2 and I wish the sales would reflect that.
Treyarch did some things right (nerfing noobtubes, eliminating the "Nuke" killstreak, adding extra content), but they are still the every-other-year-filler-team in my book until they prove otherwise.
Even though it changes nothing, I will continue to not support lazy PS3 developers by not buying their product (gives the bird to Treyarch).
Personally I think that this game is over rated. I am one of the verteran COD players And i have been playing since the very first COD... COD Black ops Campaign is amazing best campaign on a call of duty series yet. Online play uhm not so much... Campaign gets a 10/10 online... only gets a 7.5/10. If you dont belive me Play mw2 for a day. Might Change your mind. If that doesnt then Play Cod 4. That will change your mind Thanks for the review
