Writer's note: This article contains spoilers both from the ending of Resistance 2, and gives some Resistance 3 plot information away.
Resistance. When the PlayStation 3 was making its debut around the world, the console war beginning, Resistance: Fall of Man was one of the games that won over many early PS3 gamers. It displayed the abilities of the PlayStation 3 at the time, and impressed many. Resistance 2 came around, fixing some of the underlying issues that people had seen in the first. It didn't get nearly as much attention as the first, but nonetheless it got quite a bit.
Now comes Resistance 3. This game is essentially the game that determines everything; whether the Resistance series will sink or swim. As the release of Resistance 3 grows closer, we can finally get a feel for the game.
Transition from Resistance 2 to Resistance 3
In this installment of the game, you play as Joe Capelli. Don't remember him? He's the individual who kill Nathan Hale (you) at the end of Resistance 2. He's changed a bit since we last saw him, though. He's left SPRA (Special Projects Research Administration), and throughout the four year gap between the two titles lives a life normalcy. Oddly enough, his wife becomes Nathan Hale's stepsister Susan. They have a child (Jack) together, who becomes the motivation for the entirety of the game's plot. Jack becomes ill, and therefore Joe, Susan, and Jack travel across America to find Dr. Malikov for a cure.
Speaking of America...
Welcome to Desolate Chimerica
In previous Resistance titles, gamers saw modern civilization under attack. Believe it or not, things don't magically rebuild themselves after each game. In the four years that passed, America has become fully occupied by Chimera. You'll no longer feel as though you're fighting in cities under attack, but as though you're fighting in a land ruined by war. Confirmed cities include Haven, OK (where Capelli settled down); Saint Louis, MO; and New York City.
An example of the environment can be found at just about any comparison between the two games. In previous Resistance games, you may have found yourself in a skyscraper, fighting off Chimera in a desperate attempt for survival. Now, you'll be in a river that is inhabited by a massive Kraken. Human settlements still exist, but they are very few, and not exactly something we'd consider civilized in modern day. You'll see humans cooking and consuming Chimera, and, under the circumstances cannibalism. We might not be fighting off only Chimera, after all.
What shall we kill them with?
New weapons
The weapon wheel from the original Resistance: Fall of Man has returned. No longer will gamers be restricted to only two weapons at a time; that's so Call of Duty. There are some returning weapons, including the Bullseye, Auger, and Marksman. The developers are hoping to change the design of the weapons a bit, to match the new, downgraded human society. Your weapons won't shine in the sunlight. Sorry.
The only known new weapon thus far is the Mutator. This weapon is exactly what you'd expect from Insomniac, who also developed the Ratchet & Clank games. On one end you have a shotgun barrel, and on the other you have a 'can of goo'. The shotgun barrel side sprays a crowd-control substance that will disorient Chimera, making for easy targets. The 'can of goo' side shoots cysts onto the enemies, which, when exploding and killing the enemy they're on, spray more mist onto nearby enemies. Chain reaction anyone?
There will also be a new upgrade system. When using a weapon, you earn points for that weapon, which can be used to upgrade certain aspects and capabilities of it. One upgrade for the Mutator allows us to, rather than making the Chimera blow one another up, have them attack each other. If we're lucky, we won't get straightforward, Call of Duty-style weapon upgrades. Let's get some creative upgrades, Insomniac!
Multiplayer
The multiplayers in both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 were less than pleasing in a world where Battlefield and Call of Duty coexist. Insomniac isn't giving up, though, and are going to be changing the multiplayer experience by cutting what wasn't good in the previous multiplayers, and adding some new things in.
For one, say goodbye to the large player count of 60. Co-op is also returning in the campaign mode. The second player will play as John Harper. According to Creative Director Marcus Smith, the two-player cooperative campaign is "an example of Insomniac focusing on one awesome consistent experience as opposed to a series of discrete missions or scenarios."
The story is also going to be coinciding with the multiplayer game mode. Chances are that throughout the course of the campaign, you'll hear about various battles taking place in other areas in the world. Some multiplayer modes might be some of those battles mentioned throughout the game, allowing for a more interesting and story-driven multiplayer experience. That's certainly a way to get campaign-based gamers into the multiplayer world... if those kind of gamers still exist.

Although Resistance 3 is still a ways off, my hopes are high for this title. It seems that Insomniac is working hard to change the tone of the series to not only make sense time wise in the Resistance series, but by 'cutting the fat' and adding new things to the experience. We're not going to get Resistance 2 with new guns and a new setting; but a new, standalone game.
