PlayStation Phone could hurt sony... or create a big success.
Well as it has been speculated about recently but with now it seems the immanent release of the PlayStation Phone, it has been said it could hurt Sony in both the Phone market and that of the Gaming. It seems a release of this phone could be sooner than expected, as PSP SDK's are being released to developers, could this be for the development of games for the new Device? Or just to carry on building ground for that of the PSP (which is still selling even if it is in small amounts).
Although the development of this phone could improve the outlook for Sony Ericsson as recent poor development of phones such as the Xperia X10 showing significant problems that have gave problems for the company and it sales of phone, is it that Sony simply need to find a unique selling point? Although such phones as the Nokia N-Gage that has already tried a 'gaming' phone did not catch on. But SCE's approach to hardware is radically different, so this new concept could do more harm than good.
So, what are the good points of a PlayStation phone that could benefit us users? Well seeing as Sony already have a team of developers under there belt as well as strong links with outside developers we could see a great range of games specifically designed to work with the 'gaming phone' that could allow us to update our games and download new ones while in the middle of town with either the use of WiFi or the 3G connection that would be available with the network. Is this just the next step Sony could take to improve on there handheld gaming device.
But what could see this to be a let down for Sony and there customers, well for a handheld device the PSP is already expensive, then adding a phone into the mix along with a bundle of added features could send the price over the top and competing with the to end 'smartphones' this would be a big put off for most customers already. Then pairing a high price with a small market could cause disaster, for instance can you really imagine the older market buying a phone for its gaming capabilities? I believe this would be aimed at the younger market who have have had experiences with there PSP and PS3 consoles.
On the whole there is two ways this development could go, we can only hope it does well in its seeminly untouched area of the market.
