Rumor: Microsoft Planning a Television Service for 360

According to a Reuters report, Microsoft is currently in talks to bring some kind of a television subscription service to the Xbox 360. A couple of years ago we may have deemed this impossible, but with things like the ESPN streaming service, such things are believable now.

The report claims that the Xbox Live provider is currently in talks with television networks, in an attempt to make the Xbox 360 a "virtual cable operator" for a monthly rate. The anonymous tipsters said that the service is also going to strive to allow watchers to watch their favorite shows with added interactivity of a sort. Additionally, Microsoft would like to have some standalone Xbox Live channels, similar to that aforementioned ESPN streaming service.

The giant of a corporation Microsoft refused to comment. The tipsters noted that such a service may take another year. If this is indeed a legitimate resource, it may or may not be revealed by Microsoft for some time.

Schaff's Stance - The console is becoming less and less of a console as time passes. Is that a bad thing? I'm not entirely decided. Hey, if they can make it work, I'm all for it. My worry is that they're going to turn consoles into universal media devices, and granted past experiences with consoles, will mean a lot more room for glitches and hacks to plague companies. Again, is that a bad thing?

It'd be a bad idea IMO.

Like some others stated, the purpose of a gaming console is for "gaming".
