WoW Player Kicked From Guild for Being Deaf

Well you no longer have to be bad at a game to get kicked from a clan or guild. Now being deaf will be your ticket to getting rejected from teams.

User Unwelcomed explained how he was involved in an accident significantly damaged his hearing. Since he had troubles talking to friends and listening to music he turned to World of Warcraft to boost his morale. His guild didn't mind his disability till they asked him to use the Vent voice chat servers. He said no but mentioned he could research raids and use DBMs.

His guild didn't really care about his "raid researching" abilities and kicked him. Here is his complaint:

Hey there thanks for clicking my post. This is going to be a bit lengthy.

I recently had an accident that resulted in the permanent lose of my hearing. The last few months have been the hardest i have ever known. I have had to deal with never listening to music and talking to people has become exhausting.

Its become that most people i thought were my friends just didn’t want to deal with me anymore as i had become inconvenient. I felt more alone than ever.

So i came back to wow. Now I’ve been playing with my guild for about 4 years. We have all become close friends. We have even done some rl guild parties. I explained why i have been off for so long to the guild. I explained my condition. Everyone was pretty supportive for about 5 minutes.

Do you know what the first question i got from my guild leader was? He asked me if i could still use vent. I told him no, but tried to assure him it wouldn’t be a problem as i usually research the fights before hand and use dbm.

He tells me that i can’t raid unless i have vent. Guild rules and all. I was pissed. After a huge blow out between us i get removed from the guild and put on ignore. Our guild wasn’t even that good. We did naxx full clear 10 man once.

After that i cried. I didn’t know what to do, who to turn to. I tried joining up with some other guilds but their response to why i can’t use vent went about the same.

So i come to the forums to not only vent my frustrations but to find others with my condition. Are there any deaf friendly raiding guilds out there? Would you be willing to take me in? How have you dealt with being deaf?

Any advice is appreciated, so long as its constructive.

Thanks for letting me blow off some steam, typing this out has helped.

Got deaf, got kicked, cried.

Edit: I can’t believe the responses i have received. My brother and i have been reading all of them and i have not felt such compassion in such a long time. (And from the wow forums no less lol) Its almost to much to handle. Now don’t get me wrong, i’m 6’3 240 pounds built like a truck chef crying just isn’t something i do. lol But here i am making an exception.

My brother and i have decided to make something out of our guild. The offers have been appreciated and noted. Thank You all again for the feedback it means more than you could ever know.

I guess the guild really had their heart set on voice chatting. Hopefully this kid joins another guild and gets his vengeance.

Do a barrel roll!
Thould be able to understand his problems instead of creating more and making them worse. Wow, I have never played WoW but this is a sad life story, especially NOT being able to LISTEN TO MUSIC again. That stinks.

Thats crazy ,
i used to play WoW, but it became to addicting, so i removed myself completely from it.

That must suck , its crazy how 1 little simple thing ( hearing ) can emotionally and socially affect one .

I feel bad for him ,
Yes , vent is a necessity for raids , but it seems like he knew what he was doing so why not give him a chance ? e-Friends , may not always be as nice as they seem , so i dont trust any.

If I knew him I'd feel compassion, but since I don't know him, if he cant hear them as theyre discussing the raid real-time, then he will be no help, altho they should have atleast let him participate in one rather than doubt him fully from the start. Still games are games if you're going to have a weak link, you need to get rid of him/her. Same with CoD, if you were hell bent on winning and had a noob who was doing really bad on your team, you'd want him gone right?

your right, to an extent.
he said he researched the fight, and dmb, so he pretty much knew what he was doing when it came to raids ..
im sure he could type, why couldnt they type the important stuff also ?

Well thats one thing I always argue about, when guilds are like "Vent is a neccesity" My question is always "Well whats wrong with typing?" WHy should I have to go out and buy a headset when the free typing system is there, obviously it doesnt apply to him cus hes deaf, but you know what guilds are like, no time to type always shouting "AHHH QUICK BEHIND, QUICK T-MORE NEEDS HELP, GET TO THE PLACE, GOOOO" God I hate guild dungeons/raids/quests.

Vent is really important for a lot of fights because they are very complicated and require coordination and instantaneous switches and commands between members of a raid. The part that got me confused though was "Our guild wasn’t even that good. We did naxx full clear 10 man once.", his guild sucks balls why are they worried? Also if he was good and could micro I am sure the guild would keep him. So overall Sub-standard player+deaf+shitty guild= FAIL. He should be happy for getting kicked he can now PUB and clear stuff, naxx was ez shit on WOTLK.

You don't really need vent for low end raids but at higher level content and with hard modes, you need it for sure. It is faster to talk and especially you can't type because good players don't click they use key-bindings. So can't being able to play because you are typing doesn't really work out when you are in a fight that requires you to react quickly.

Ive never done a raid on WoW so I dont know how hard they are, but couldnt they just nominate a person to oversee it and bark out instructions? I play Atlantica Online, and in their dungeons we just get the nation leader to spam instructions that pop up on the screen, then again its a turn based fight system so its totally different
