Post: Custom Firmware Hits Ps3

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Anyone who has been active on the forums or the shoutbox will probably know what is going on here (more so than me) so here is a short piece on the ins and outs of the PS3 custom firmware. If you are thinking "oh it's just a small hack" then you are wrong. It could open the doors to homebrew and even pirated games. It is so big that even national news companies are reporting about it.

How did it happen?
After months of hacking by fail0verflow, the PS3's private key has finally been released! GeoHotz originally found the private key and has only now released it. The exact details of how they extracted the keys is unknown (to me anyway) but for all you users who think that making your player have unlimited ammo on Modern Warfare 2 is 1337 hacking. You go tell these guys that. I think they'll have something else to say about it.

What does this mean for me?
The main focus of this project was to be able to get OtherOS back on the PS3 so I guess that is going to be a big part of this hack. Fail0verfow as well as GeoHotz both announced they are against piracy but that doesn't mean that it is out of the question. You will be able to run signed homebrew and maybe even pirated games at some stage. If a signed FTP (File Transfer Protocol) were to be made, access to all the Playstation's files would be given to the user.

Will this be fixed?
I've been hearing many things about this and what I've heard the most is that it will not be fixed by a simple firmware update. The trouble with this is that the master key is hard coded into the CPU. This means Sony either replace every PS3 with a new one with a randomly generated code, or it doesn't get fixed.

Will I get banned?
No one knows. Some claim Sony can see your every move but others think it's a bunch of nonsense. If you look at all the people with jailbreaks, I haven't heard of a single person who got banned for it. It's more likely that Sony will strike the source of the hack rather than everyone using it until they can monitor the situation.

How do I do it?
This thread may help you. It's by a fellow NextGenUpdate user: You must login or register to view this content. they will know more about it than me. If you regularly check the Playstation 3 Exploits and Hacks section, more and more information will come to light making this hack more and more useful to our members.

Keywords and definitions:
Homebrew: Apps, games or software developed by private users for a device (often console) which was not made by the developers (in this case Sony).
Signed: Using the hidden key to "trick" the PS3 thinking your are installing a legitimate product.
FTP: A way of transferring files over a network.

If you think any of this information is incorrect or needs updating, please PM me. I wrote this without looking at any sources, just by reading the shoutbox and in a hurry because no reporters could be bothered to report on one of the biggest stories of the year (couldn't find somewhere to copy and paste it from) :p.
