In the new update (Beta 1.3) Minecraft lets you choose the seed you want to create a new world. You can still get a random world or you can use someone else's seed. For more info on seeds please read this post: You must login or register to view this content.
What is a seed?
-A seed is the basis of minecraft generation, it generates everything from landmasses to diamond ores and the nether. (Your unique world)
How do I get my seed back after I create a world?
