Industry sources had recently told Kotaku that new Xbox and PlayStation consoles aren’t likely to be released until 2014. Nintendo is predicted to launch their next console in 2012, so Microsoft and Sony are likely to wait out that generation. “Both MS and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better,” says a man who worked for companies like Sony and Microsoft. In addition, other sources told Kotaku the similar news: that the release of a next generation console is likely to be in 2014, and 2013 if either companies feels “pushed.” If the next consoles are released in 2014, the gap of consoles for Microsoft would be nine years while Sony clocks in at eight years.

“I think we'll see a game of chicken between Sony and Microsoft. Sony definitely isn't launching a successor before 2014 and could stand to benefit by having Microsoft launch first as PS3 builds in to North America and builds a strong position in Europe. Microsoft claims there's a lot more room in Xbox 360 for developers to max out, but here PS3 could have a strong advantage,” says Billy Pidgeon, an industry analyst. Billy sees this as a tactical move by Sony, as there are “capitalizing” on the time in which they’ve got to come up with a well structured and functioning console. Sony PlayStation spokesperson Patrick Seybold refused to comment on the future of the consoles. Likely, Microsoft has been keeping their lips sealed as well. Shane Kim, former Xbox executive, said in 2009 that Microsoft will support the Xbox until 2015. Accordingly, the addition of the Kinect gives the Xbox more relevance and headroom.

The economy is playing a massive role on the release of these consoles. With a struggling economy, especially in North America, consumers are likely to be hesitant when it comes to buying such expensive pieces of electronics. “I don't think either Sony or Microsoft are interested in a new console till they can advance the technology, and they certainly don't want to launch at a $600 price point. It may take till 2014 to get 2TB hard drives, uber fast CPUs and state-of-the art graphics and sell at $400,” marks analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities. The only upside to the delay of consoles for are for Nintendo. They can freely release their next console without having to worry about the competition. Pidgeon also stated, “If Nintendo does very well with the next console. Microsoft and Sony will quickly get a lot more serious about next generation." Now, if Nintendo were to release a good machine which could compete with the graphics and capabilities of the current generation consoles, then Microsoft and Sony would have motives in order to release a new, competing, console. Until more moves are made by the companies, we won’t see too much of new console talks. Things are likely to change however after the next Nintendo console release.

I dont understand what else can be put into a ps3? Everything is there and of it isnt they can add it via update and not waste millions on a new system.

I would wait till 2014 for those items, especially the super fast CPU. Dont really need a 2TB harddrive as I still cant manage to fill my 250gb harddrive up. The graphics would be very nice. The only thing is, do you think Call Of Duty and Battlefield will carry till then? They are major companies, and include the most into their games. For Sony and Microsoft to have uber good graphics, it would be sick. Nintendo would be better if they got good graphics, and better controls for FPS games. And 3D... Not too sure. It'd be costly for costumers

I'm sure online access will end up just like it did on the original Xbox. People will still be able to play for limited time. If they left the servers up forever, it would not entice people to buy their new console.

I would like more power. the graphics now are just about right for me, but the fps is shit. I liked resistance 1 when the ps3 launched cause it was 60fps... didn't matter how much you threw at it, just 60 fps. now you get 2 smoke grenades on one screen and you bog down big time. almost 20 fps. I don't think they could do much better with the graphics with how good most modern games look, but being able to keep up with them seamlessly would be the only enticing thing for me.
