A while ago, in November 2009, Crytek planned to offer free licenses to universities wanting to work with CryEngine 3. Stunningly, 250 different universities have shown interest upon Crytek's offer.

A message on Crytek's website read, "Academic institutions in a wide variety of fields including physics, computer science, architecture, film-making, art and design use Crytek's all-in-one game development solution for their projects." This is a pretty huge deal, considering that Crytek is offering educational services for those who are interested. If I come across a list of which universities are exactly doing this, I'll be sure to add it.
