and i was considering buying a vps server but i dont know how to set it up :L

Well if you want free if you have 2 pc's you can host the server off the other pc and just never turn it off
or if your willing to pay about 12-18 £ you can rent a server

An average server should not be very expansive, but if you want to make a big one you need much $$$ for a powerful dedicated server..

I use Craftbukkit however I dont have it on 24/7.
