Due to security issues of changing psn passwords through the web, Sony has temporarily turned off the PlayStation Network online sign-in services.
As one user from the PS Blog’s EU forum noted:

In the meantime you will still be able to sign into PSN via your PlayStation 3 and PSP devices to connect to game services and view Trophy/Friends information.

i never needed an email to restore my password, all i needed was to get online and change it from my ps3. i guess some have to use an email. besides that, sony is only doing this to make sure they dont get hacked to this extreme again, its a necessary precaution, and if people here spotted that flaw, imagine hackers ready to pounce....good post. good thing i already changed my password
