Its a fking gaming console. You want to watch a movie? Go buy a DVD/Blueray
I'll tell you right now, that having DVD playback or even Blu-Ray makes a hell of a difference. I'll go into reasons why:
- Having higher-end DVD's could allow better quality reading and loading times.
- This was proven when SSBB came out. It used a DL format for 8 gigabytes. However, the fact the Wii wasn't designed for DVD's, especially a DVD-DL, proved when Wii lasers were strained to the point the Wii could no longer read discs.
- Blu-Ray provides a much higher capacity for games, in addition to being extremely reliable and fast. Quality games could be supported instead of the garbage junkware we've been seeing from Third-Party Wii games.
- Blu-Ray is almost done replacing DVD's. Wii U having this could help rid of DVD's. To have a DVD player later on would be ridiculous. Here's an analogy: Instead of the PS2 being released with a DVD player, it came with a VHS player. At that time, VHS was still supported. But how outdated was it? Really outdated.
Ultimately, a DVD or Blu-Ray player is an essential asset to a console in this day and age. It will help and influence how games are on the Wii U. The fact is doesn't have it is an extremely strong foreshadow that the Wii will turn out to be similar to it's predecessor. The wii using WBFS as a format was absolutely ridiculous, and the fact that the Wii U is already using dated technology by industry standards is just as absurd.
It won't flop. Despite Sony and MS fanboys constantly bitching at each other over who is better, Nintendo's fan base is hardcore, worse than Sony and MS fans. Nintendo will do the exact same predictable shit as always and Nintendo fans just buy it all. Nintendo will use the cheapest parts they can find in order to maximise profits while at least attempting to create something that could perhaps compete graphically with the 360 and PS3. The cost will drive gamers to buy it, as well as the newest novelty feature they decide to add. Then they'll release the same games they release for every console. Same old Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, other kiddie crap or exercise stuff they've tried to do from Wii, while perhaps doing at least one or two decent adult games like Resident Evil and GoldenEye. If they copy their handheld formula, they'll release a new version when sales drop, but not before releasing some new colours to see if that helps first.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the majority of the Wii fan base is compromised of
casual gamers. One or two Nintendo made games per year won't satisfy the hardcore side, it would need to be much more like the N64 Era in order to satisfy the hardcore gamers. Even then N64 was still being ridiculous by using cartridges at that time. But at least they could provide quality games. The Wii barely has. They need franchises back, and stop trying to appeal to casual gamers with diet games or whatever.
Most of the hardcore has moved on to the PS3 or 360. Goldeneye and Resident Evil on Wii is shit. We got a PS2 rehash (Resident Evil 4), long after it came out. Goldeneye is a rehash a well, but it proved to be fun. Regardless, rehashes aren't enough. The Wii U isn't on quality mode, it's on money mode. Everything they're doing to appeal to the casual market is all for money, bottom line. Wii U is stated to be slightly more powerful than the PS3, but even I doubt that. Sega Saturn was the most powerful console in it's time by miles, but it wasn't utilized properly. I don't think the Wii U will be utilized properly as well. It's all a gimmick, the controller to appeal to families who'll fork out the money to seem cool with something unique. Re-releasing and price drops may have worked with the Wii, but I'll be damned if they can get away with it again on the U.
It's all about money for Nintendo, maximum profits. The Wii has shown it, and the U is already started to show traces of following as well.
