Although Nintendo has headed up some amazing innovations in gaming, they never really seem to be at the forefront of the best gaming technology.

One thing that has driven many people away from Nintendo's consoles is the fact that they have always lacked any real multimedia support, such as DVD playback.

With the release of the Wii U there were those of us that had high hopes Nintendo would try catching up with other consoles and add support for DVD and possibly BluRay.

Well it is official that those hopes have been crushed. The Wii U, just like the Wii before it, will still have no DVD or BluRay support.

Company president, Satoru Iwata stated:

Now in my opinion this is a mistake on Nintendo's part. In a day and age when everyone wants everything in one place, it is necessary for a gaming system to have as much multimedia support as possible. Many people have completely replaced their multimedia setup with a console and good sound system. Despite that, Nintendo believes they can still leave out such a useful feature and stay on par with the other consoles.

So what are your opinions? Should the Wii U have support for DVD and BluRay? Do you find it important that a gaming system have multimedia support? Does the Wii U sound like a deal or a dud so far?

In my opinion it looks like they just added a tablet controller to the Wii. The Wii U will still support Wii games, controllers, and I don't see too much innovation here. Still nothing that would make me run out buying one.

It lives, my 360 is back
Nintendo won't ever use anything like a DVD or a Blu-Ray drive. They'll want to use their own disc format in order to stop paying royalties to their competition. It's why MS backed HD-DVD and started that new disc format (which required an upgrade on the 360 recently), why the GameCube used this shitty mini-DVDs and those weird Wii format discs.

Sony helped created DVDs so would get royalties, at least until the format went mainstream and everyone could do it. Not sure if that was before or after the Wii came out.

At least I can fight
This is sad. Why don't they try to make a legit console? They could turn some classic games into some pretty kick ass modern games.

It won't flop.

Despite Sony and MS fanboys constantly bitching at each other over who is better, Nintendo's fan base is hardcore, worse than Sony and MS fans. Nintendo will do the exact same predictable shit as always and Nintendo fans just buy it all.

Nintendo will use the cheapest parts they can find in order to maximise profits while at least attempting to create something that could perhaps compete graphically with the 360 and PS3. The cost will drive gamers to buy it, as well as the newest novelty feature they decide to add. Then they'll release the same games they release for every console. Same old Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, other kiddie crap or exercise stuff they've tried to do from Wii, while perhaps doing at least one or two decent adult games like Resident Evil and GoldenEye.

If they copy their handheld formula, they'll release a new version when sales drop, but not before releasing some new colours to see if that helps first.
