Well, GameInformer posted this story yesterday, but I dug a bit deeper to take all of this past a rumor and confirm that there is a new Playstation 3 model will be coming to the market. For now it seems to only be confirmed for release on Japanese markets, but I have little doubt that it will soon be coming to stores around the world.

The new model will be CECH-3000B. The changes will not be anything groundbreaking but there will be changes nonetheless

The 3000B will be a 320Gb system. The changes include the power usage going from 230Watts to 200Watts. This will provide energy savings. The new system will also weigh less. It will be 2.6kg, down from the current 3.0kg weight of a PS3 slim.

Other changes will include some unknown adjustments to the power and eject buttons and the removal of the colored LED's on the system. It is also reported that instead of the smooth sides that are on all current slim models, the sides of the 3000B will be textured in the same way the top is.

All other specifications look to be the same as current models, including pricing.

On the official Japanese Playstation product page for the 3000B the release date is listed as:

This means that some Japanese stores may have already seen the release of this product. Hopefully we will all be seeing it too.

UPDATE

After a tip from a friend and further review of the product page, it looks as if this new PS3 will have compatibility with PS2 games. The product page states:

This product, "PlayStation 2" are having a compatibility with proprietary software.

Now that quote is Japanese translated to English so it is a bit choppy, but it is pretty clear that is is stating that, "This product" meaning the CECH-3000B Playstation, will be compatible with Playstation 2 games via proprietary software.

Hopefully a firmware update for all other systems will also be released, allowing us to play our PS2 games again, but there is no confirmation of that.

Think they're looking to the new customers r current ones getting a new PS3 to replace their 'broken' one not for all of us to suddenly throw out our PS3s  (like you said the difference is minor)
