As gamers we all hear about people who blame violent crime on equally or even more violent video games. Psychologists and counselors spout off these unbelievable tales of the child gamer turned serial killer. Many parents will not allow their children to play such violent games, in the belief that they will have an adverse affect on their children.
Video games themselves should have an age limit. Now that limit should be set by parents based upon the maturity of their own individual child. Some children will become violent after playing violent games. Some will not.
The notion that all people will be adversely affected by video games is a gross over generalization.
A Baylor University study has found that while in many cases video games will increase the players aggression, they will not be likely to put that aggression into violent crime. This is due to the fact that the users who are playing video games enough to derive aggression from them are not likely to break from that habit and switch to violent crime. They are more likely to put that aggression back into video games.
Now I will admit that there have been cases of violence caused directly and indirectly by video games. Some people will commit crime to feed their gaming habit. While some simply derive anger and violent tendencies from the imagery in violent games.
Overall the study shows that gaming will cause a decrease in crime rate. This is simply due to the fact that more people are playing games. They aren't on the streets getting into real drugs, real guns, or real gangs. They are simulating it in the legal comfort of their own home.
So what are your opinions? Do you think that video games increase violence? Decrease it? DO violent video games have a direct mental affect on you or anyone you know?
