IBM has been an innovator in computer technology for many years now. We can thank them for many of today's technologies. Whether it be directly or indirectly, IBM has impacted almost every part of the world of computer technology.

Well IBM is doing it again. They are developing a new type of memory processing called phase-change memory (PCM). IBM has claimed that PCM memory will process data at a rate 100 times faster than current Flash memory. PCM will also have a read/write life of over 10 million versus the average of 3,000 reads/writes on current Flash memory.

Not only does this technology kick ass as far as speed and durability, it also kicks ass in price. PCM will cost little more than the cost of Flash memory, which will make it usable in everything from super computers to cell phones. Imagine your iPhone or Android running 100 times faster than it does now. Talk about a power house.

This memory is said to be released in 2016, which unfortunately means that the next generation of Sony and Microsoft gaming consoles will most likely not be fitted with the PCM technology.

The thing about this memory that has me excited, is to think that you could takes today's best gaming engine and multiply it by 100. Imagine the graphics capabilities that would be available to build games with. With memory types such as PCM coming at such a cheap price it will be astonishing to see what can be done with it.

So what are your opinions? Are you happy to see this type of power coming at such a cheap price? What do you see companies doing with this? Where does your imagination roam with the thought of gaming graphics increasing at such a massive number?

Network Security = Illusion
all companies have atleast 7 years of tech ahead of the release

Can't wait, this will bring a whole new dimension to phones, ipods, computers and even cars and other things. The only problem is that my brand new PS4 may not have that kind of technology. Oh well, maybe it will. Smile

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Meaning, can your processor actually make use of that 100x speed increase. No it cant, you will see SOME speed increase but not 100x since there will be bottlenecks.

Yeah but look at processors nowadays will the i7 extreme and the new AMD bulldozer. I'm just guessing but in 2016 the processors will also have greatly advanced and Windows will make use of the full 8 cores (or maybe even more).
