With the quality of downloadable games increasing it is no surprise that the price of these games has also increased. It seems that the trend of low quality titles priced at a few dollars are being replaced by more playable games priced as high as 15 dollars, or more, per title.

Chris Charla, Xbox Live Arcade's portfolio director, told You must login or register to view this content. that:

"If you look at Live Arcade, and do the math, and look at the publicly available sales numbers, you can see that average prices on XBLA have crept up over the last few years, which has been an interesting trend because on some app markets there's been a race to zero as fast as possible.

We've seen a little bit of the opposite happening. I don't really know where prices are going to go - ultimately, that's set by the market - but it has been really gratifying to see that people are willing to a premium price for digital content."

So unlike the similar mobile app market where the goal is to price the games low and gain money through ad's, the market for downloadable console games is taking the opposite approach.

Below shows how the number of XBLA games priced at 1200 points, or 15 dollars, has increased in the recent years:

  • 2009: 21 out of 86 games priced at 1200 MS Points
  • 2010: 27 out of 85 games priced at 1200 MS Points
  • 2011: 20 games released by half of the year priced at 1200 MS Points

Above shows a very significant increase. At the end of 2010 there were only 27 total games priced at 1200 points, but now we are only about two thirds of the way through 2011 and that number has close to doubled. While many prefer not to spend that amount on a downloadable title, there is a growing number of gamers who enjoy these downloadable games over anything sold in stores.

What is your opinion? Is the quality of downloadable titles increasing enough to justify an increase in price? Are there any titles priced at 1200 points that you think are not worth the money? What titles priced at 1200 points ARE worth the money? What is your opinion on the whole downloadable market in general?

Yes $10 for games with amazing time/$ ratios is way too expensive when they almost always math the same price on PSN Store.

Games are always expensive, it's how that system works, Wireless is included / you can hardwire older models, and it's actually 35-40 a year for live. Less if you're not an idiot, and if that is going to break the bank, chances are you shouldn't be purchasing either console.

No. There are specials every year around christmas / when you are about to run out, and on amazon there are frequent sales for $30/12 months.

Anyone who pays direct price is a moron. Also, 4 1-years = $100, MAX

Yes but no one really waits until XMas to buy Xbox Live, and plus, $30 is $30. PS3 saves me big money, don't give a shit about "1 Month Earlier Maps" (I can wait) or "Better Service". PSN is just fine, no need to pay for online.

$30 = Big money? How do you afford games like CoD that cost twice that? or a console, for that matter. Also, have fun paying a higher energy bill. It wastes power like a bitch.
