While many are talking about the anticipation of EA's latest installment of it's Battlefield Series, Battlefield 3, many others are stuck on the fact that you will be required to run the game on EA's proprietary Origin gaming client.

Battlefield 3 will be available at most retail stores and digital retailers, excluding valve. What has some players up in arms is the fact that, whether the title is purchased as a digital download or a boxed copy purchased in store, they will be required to install the Origin client. Requiring the download of the client is EA's way of promoting it. Thousands of players will be purchasing BF3 for their PC and EA is taking that chance and hoping the gaming client will catch gamers eyes.

Daniel Matros confirmed this via his twitter. Although this is new for EA, it is far from new in the gaming world. Valve instituted the same method with it's steam engine. Starting with Half-Life 2 and every game after it you were required to download the Steam client when playing on PC.

So what do you think? Do you think that EA requiring the download of it's client is invasive? Do you think you should have the option to opt out of using the client? Do you think it is smart of them to use this method to promote the Origin client?

This isn’t a big surprise, as many games these days require a client to run in the background, most notably games from Valve, where Steam is required. However, it can become an issue if the client is draining CPU power, which was the case with Origin during the Battlefield 3 alpha trial.

according to DICE’s Daniel Martos, Origin will be required in order to play Battlefield 3 if the game is bought in retail. We don’t know whether this is true if the game is downloaded through a digital download service other than Origin, but we suspect Origin will be required no matter what.
