A video has been released at PAX which shows Notch playing the new 1.8 update to Minecraft. In this commentary, Notch walks us through all the new features introduced in the future 1.8 update. These new features include:
Creative Mode: Creative mode is for those who just want to build without having to spend hours gathering items. You also do not lose health. Instead of an inventory, when pressing E you are presented a window with all of the items in game. You can place an unlimited amount of any item - you are not limited to how many you have in your inventory. You can also destroy blocks instantly. You can also fly in creative mode, simply by double tapping the jump button, as seen in the video.
NPC Villages: Randomly generated villages with NPCs running around in them. You will see what these look like in the video.
New Terrain/Biomes: The terrain generator has undergone some improvements. Rivers will be introduced in the update, as well as ravines, larger and more distinct biomes, and a plains biome, which is flat land with many little hills. There will also be abandon mines and strongholds.
New Lighting Engines: Day and night transitions are much faster and cleaner.
Sprinting: You are now able to sprint. Right now, sprinting is limited to a few seconds, but when the update launches, you will be able to sprint for unlimited distances, at the cost of your hunger bar. Attacking a mob/animal while sprinting will send the mob/animal a fair distance backwards.
Hunger Bar: In the new update, you need to eat to maintain your health. The hunger bar decreases over time, and as long as the hunger bar is full your health will refill automatically.
Experience Bar: Killing mobs/animals grants you experience. Right now, there is nothing to spend those points on, but it is currently under development.
Critical Hits: Critical hits have been introduced to combat. You will recognize a critical hit when you see a particle effect when hitting a monster/mob. You can achieve a critical hit randomly, or by jumping and hitting the mob/animal and the way down from the jump.
Redesigned Bow: The distance of arrows now depends on how far you pull back the bow string. You pull the string back by holding the right click, and release the arrows by letting go.
Brightness: You can now adjust your games brightness level.
New Graphics: There are new explosion graphics, a new eating animation, and many other new graphics.
Endermen: A new mob introduced in this update. He is very tall and all black with white eyes. These mobs are peaceful until you place your crosshair over them. If you look at them, they stare at you until you look away. Once you do, they become hostile and can teleport to you and attack. These mobs also pick up blocks.

The update will be split into two parts, as it is pretty large. The first part will be released within a couple of weeks, with the second part following shortly after.
