Ever pondered why the popular Minecraft has never made its way to Steam? A couple days ago on his personal blog, Marcus Persson, the creator of the game, explained the clear reasoning behind this. Noting the same issues which Electronic Arts stated, Steam poses much limitations for developers themselves. Persson went on to claim that placing Minecraft on the Steam service would cripple their own ability to freely edit the game, and ultimately limit their communication with gamers.

"Being on Steam limits a lot of what we’re allowed to do with the game, and how we’re allowed to talk to our users," Persson said. "We wouldn’t be able to, say, sell capes or have a map marketplace on minecraft.net that works with Steam customers in a way that keeps Valve happy. It would effectively split the Minecraft community into two parts, where only some of the players can access all of the weird content we want to add to the game."

Though hope may seem dim, Persson also mentioned his studios constant communication with Valve, operators of Steam service. The developer hopes that resolution may arise in regards to the restrictions which they face if Minecraft was to incorporate through Steam. As far as current progress goes, Persson’s does not express much optimism regarding the situation.

As previously mentioned, this is not the first corporation to clash with Valve. Dating back to July, Electronic Arts pulled Crysis 2 in order to retain full control of the title, after Valve placed limitations to freely release updates as desired.

So whether you are all for bringing Minecraft to Steam, or strictly against it, there is still much progress to be made before such thing would happen.

I also heard he said he might make a social network called notcher or something :P
I guess if steam took it it would just be the exe hopefully, and the game updates through that anyway.

Any restrictions beyond the developer's discretion often comes at a cost, and I'm glad Minecraft isn't going to be on Steam any time soon.
I wish it were easier for devs to self-publish their games, and I'm glad Mr. Persson was able to successfully do so.
Nothing is better than no service integration beyond the developer's control, and that little PC DVD symbol on the top of those computer game cases.

It just shows when a developer cares about their fanbase, and not just the money.

I dont understand why anyone would want this on steam? even if there weren't restrictions. All it means is you'd have to run steam whilst you are running minecraft. Which, to those who can only just run minecraft as it is, is never going to work. Steam offers very little, and due to the amount of users it has ive found that the application can be hugely laggy sometimes due to the servers being overloaded. I get annoyed when a game goes through steam, it seems as though a company has sold out so a wider audience will purchase the game. I really hate steam but am forced to have it due to some of my games demanding it. Imo steam should be got rid of all together. Its useless laggy junk.

Read this on the "Word of Notch" the other day.

I am happy that it isn't going to be on steam and as already mentioned, the fact that Notch cares about his customers.
