I've used the Buildcraft mod for some time now (also used the Industrial mod too) but i want to know say if the server used a mod like Buildcraft where the client side has to install the mod too - could people without the client mod still join?

I do believe they can still join but the client would have major bugs and not know what to do with the mod.
The mods would not work unless the client had them installed aswell.
But some good plugins are like iconomy, factions, towny, multiverse (along with multiinv) MCMMO But That depends on what kind of server you are
