The Battlefield 3 beta has been in full swing for a few days now and we found our teams biggest battlefield nerds to spend some time in the beta. Read on ahead to find out the verdict.
Battlefield has always revolved around teamwork and squad play. With the squad system slightly broken this becomes hard to do. With a lot of people now on-board the beta you will find yourself surrounded by noobs. Squad leaders not deploying beacons, Assault players not dropping med kits and the list goes on. That aside, if you are a hardcore Battlefield nut like myself you will definitely enjoy your first taste. The new engine looks great and the improved physics from EA's sport engine (ANTS) works wonderful. Giving you the ability to go prone, climb and crawl like a real soldier.
My time with the beta so far has been enjoyable. Dice seem to have copied a few design elements from their previous multiplayer game (MoH), such as the HUD, kill cam design and the overall layout gives off a more modern MoH feel. The sound is fantastic and you don't get the full experience without a good quality headset. The lighting is amazing, tho the graphics aren't quite what I expected. I found them a little fuzzy. The audition of prone is a great feature tho I can see it getting rather annoying on rush. I found myself arming the charge a few times only to be shot in the back by a sniper 300m away lying in a bush
I also noticed a lot of good changes to the HUD and display in general. The minimap has been greatly improved in size and detail and the scoring system display is larger with badges occasionally cascading on your screen, which can be a distraction in a full-scale war. I'm very much looking forward to the use of vehicles, mostly getting my hands dirty in a M1 Abrams tank, or my head spinning in an FA18 Super Hornet in the sky above bringing the rain!
The rush map itself is well done with some nice transitions between sunlight, sewers and city. However, the map does not give the Battlefield experience that veterans are used to. With no vehicles, tight hallways and choke points, this is very much a CoD like map. I think that EA and Dice played it smart by releasing a CoD map so people new to the series can have an easier transition in the beta then let's say a map like "Heavy Metal".
At the end of the day beta is beta and you expect game crashes and bugs. Dice have said themselves that this is not the current version of the game and that they have fixed most of the problems with the current code. If you enjoy playing the beta, you will have a blast on the 25 th of October. See you on the Battlefield.
