Valve was aiming for a late October release for the beta for their upcoming game Counter Strike Global Offensive (CS:GO) Earlier this year Valve announced the new game in the Counter Strike series and said that an open beta would be playable by late October of 2011, but the Counter Strike pros that were given access to an early version of the game told Valve that it was better to delay the beta and fix some of the major issues they found with the game than releasing an unplayable beta that will give the game a bad image. Earlier this year Valve were aiming for an early 2012 release date for CS:GO and now, that seems unlikely since the beta hasn't even been reschedule.
In September Valve announced that they would be releasing DOTA 2 as soon as possible even if the game wasn't finished and it looked like Valve was trying to do the same for CS:GO.
Personal Opinion
With so many first person shooters coming out during the holidays, it's better for Valve to take its time making the perfect game everyone wants to play, rather than an unplayable, incredibly unbalanced game that no one likes. It's good to see that Valve is listening to the community even before the beta is even released.
