Assassins Creed Revelations - First Thoughts
By: Wondoh // 2nd November 2011

Assassins Creed Revelations has been released for around a week now, and is the last game in the series of Ezio's story. (Whether that means it will be the last in the franchise is yet to be apparent).
I for one have been a huge fan of the Assassins creed series ever since the first game with Altiar, and is probably my favorite of the series to date.

I was incredibly hyped for Revelations as it was the final point in the long story, 4 years on from Brotherhood Ezio is getting old and as soon as I started the game I was already disappointed by one key feature....

Wheres the white?

White has been the trademark look for the assassins and it was disappointing to discover that you couldn't even buy a white dye from the clothing stores. The clothes that the assassins used to wear were visually appealing and this new look really didn't do it for me.

However the good news is the new city Constantinople aka Istanbul has shown that the beauty of the locations has not been lost. The new civilians of the city have hugely improved and are a lot more individual and unique. The city is huge but at some points I felt as if I was running in circles and the map just seemed to get a bit too repetitive. Ziplines however are a great new feature for quickly getting around the map or for retreating away from enemies.
Bombs have also been introduced into the game and give you the ability to customize your own bombs for whatever use you have. Customization include different content such as blood or smoke as well as the lethal ball bearings.

The new den defense mini game is one of my favorite new features. A lot like "Bloon Tower defense" you must protect your den from waves of stronger enemies. set up your assassins and barricades and make a stand. To activate the den defense sequence you need to get your Templar awareness gauge full and the Templars will attack a den which you control. This mini game is certainly a challenge, especially when the enemy introduce "tanks".

The combat system has been improved with all new ways of killing your enemies and some awesome combo opportunities. The enemies are a lot tougher and I've often found myself retreating from opponents with spears and huge hammers, while getting shot by marksmen on the roof, as they can be a struggle to take out. With the new hook blade it makes it easier to navigate around the city as well as perform some cool kills.

Features that return from Brotherhood are the ability to use the sewer tunnels to travel quicker and also the option to purchase and restore shops to earn some money and get a small discount.

Storyline

If you are a fan of the series you would have followed the story and have known about the past events. Now Desmond is in the animus, and has to finish sequences before the memories of Ezio, Altiar, and Desmond all come crashing together.

Sounds simple enough but also sounds a bit lost?

The story for me doesn't seem to go anywhere or has come from anything. It doesn't flow into the story as much as before, with the pope being in both the 2 previous games, and now it sort of jumps to a new time where Ezio is following the footsteps of Altiar. Maybe I'm just missing something but while I'm running along the rooftops I sometimes think to myself "what Am i doing again?". I didn't get this before with "Brotherhood" and Im a little surprised as I am a big fan of the Assassins Creed games.

Overview

I may have a reason for not fully enjoying the game so far and its called "Modern Warfare 3". I find myself after a Mw3 session playing a bit of Assassins Creed before going to bed. Maybe its because I'm tired or all my hype went into Mw3 that I cannot enjoy any other games at the moment, Which is a shame really as the series as previously been amazing.

So overall my first thoughts are of small disappointment, the gameplay is great and the new features are enjoyable, but the story makes it hard to follow and jumps about a lot without first making sure that its understandable. It doesn't feel as new and as fresh as I was first expecting. Give it time I may come to enjoy it, but right now its not my cup of tea Im afraid.

I give it :

I did notice this when I first visited a dye shop, however It is a rather pathetic attempt to give a white option. It's not proper white and some bits of the costume barely change
