This weekend Notch announced that Jens Bergensten (Jeb) will be the new lead developer on Minecraft, and I was lucky enough to get an interview with Jeb and I want to thank him for giving a me some of his time.
Here's the interview:
NextGenUpdate - What impact will Notch have in future Minecraft updates?
Jeb - Notch will be working on other projects now, but I will probably ask him for feedback and creative input on new features.
NGU - Are you nervous for being in charge of a game with a community as big as Minecraft's community?
Jeb - Not really, but I'm sure I won't be able to live up to the expectations of everybody
NGU - What's the first big feature you guys are going to be working on?
Jeb - The biggest priority right now is to add a mod api, but that is going to take some time... While we're working on that, I want to look at better language support and maybe writeable books.
NGU - We have been hearing about the Mod API for a long time now, will this be coming out sometime soon?
Jeb - Not "soon," but it's coming.
NGU - Minecraft is the most popular game on Youtube, will we be seeing any new features for video makers?
Jeb - Ah yes, this has been discussed for a while. We've talked about being able to upload videos directly from the game, but it will take a while until we can add that to the game.
NGU - With such amazing Minecraft mods out there, have you guys consider adding some of them to the game?
Jeb - Not at the moment, but with a mod api it will be easier for people to play with mods.
NGU - You guys just released the mobile versions of Minecraft for iOS and Android and the biggest complain has been the lack of Survival mode, have you guys thought about adding survival mode to the mobile versions of Minecraft?
Jeb - I think Aron is working on it, yes.
NGU - Since a version of Minecraft is being made for the Xbox 360 are there any chances of a version of Minecraft coming to the PlayStation 3?
Jeb - No.
NGU - There are many Minecraft clones out there, what are your thoughts on these games?
Jeb - I haven't tried them, but it's great to have more sandbox games!
NGU - Piracy is a huge issue and Minecraft has also been affected, what are your thoughts on piracy?
Jeb - We are trying to convince people to buy our games by adding value for our customers. We aren't interesting in hunting pirates.
