Word has come out from Sony itself that PlayStation 4 will not be shown at E3 2012. Speaking at a "roundtable with reporters" at CES, Sony's Kaz Hirai answered a question about the PlayStation 4 showing up at this year's E3.

It isn't needed. Sure it would be nice to get a new one, but whats the point when its not going to be a huge difference, just a different interface and case.
They should wait until there is some new hardware out that is a huge improvement over the standard used in the PS3, that it will make a noticeable difference.
Thanks to this article the rumors are finally shot down. They need to fix some things on the XMB and add the function of being able to play PS2 games again back on the slim.
