Post: Detailed Guide to Scout Helicopters
02-15-2012, 10:29 PM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); After seeing the guides on jets and tanks. I decided to do a Helicopter guide. In this guide I will talk about the upgrades, effectiveness, and the choppers themselves.

Now lets start simple. Scout helicopters can be found on Damavand Peak (Both Conquest and Rush) & Noshahar Canals (Both Conquest and Rush) They are also found in Sharqi Peninsula (Rush) and on PC they are also on Kharg Island Conquest. I have seen footage to the Z11-W being on a new Armored Kill map Bandar Desert.

The U.S. Team's scout chopper is the AH-6 "Little Bird" The R.U. Team's scout chopper is interestingly a Chinese Z11-W. Both are good but there are some notable differences. In my own opinion. The AH-6 is more maneuverable than the Z11-W. This may not really be the case, but I feel as though it is. The other notable difference is the length of the tail of the chopper. The Z11-W has a longer tail than the AH-6. This makes it hard to clear through small spaces with speed such as through the tunnel on Damavand or under the Bridge(s) on Canals. My chopper of choice is the AH-6 Little bird and I have over 660 Kills with it, and over 13 hours in it. I have a little over 300 Kills with the Z11-W and just over 7 hours with it. This gives me a combined kill number of 950 and I combined time in them of 20+ hours. My best game in a scout chopper was with the AH-6 in Rush on Canals. As you may know, a record was set on XBOX of 76-0 with the same chopper. I was using Laser Painter, Guided Missile, and ECM Jammer. I went 46-0 in that game.

OK now for the unlocks.

IR Flares
Unlocked at 400 Points in a Scout Chopper.

"Infrared Flare launchers that when launched will distract incoming missiles and cause them to miss their locked target"
I do not like this definition as it is misleading. A guided missile or a laser guided javelin missile will NOT be distracted as they are NOT a heat seeking missile. But IR flares will distract Stinger missiles and Igla missiles, as well as Heat seekers from another chopper. IR flares also do NOT slow down or prevent a soflam/CITV station from locking on to you, as they are laser painters. I recommend using these until you unlock the ECM Jammer.

You must login or register to view this content.

Heat Seekers
Unlocked at 1200 points in a Scout Chopper.

"Heat seeking missiles launched by the pilot that lock on to, and track enemy aircraft"
These are going to be the second most used thing in choppers behind flares. They are your best friend when you are at long distance Air 2 Air battles. Although distracted by flares, they are great but they do not destroy the chopper in 2 hits, it leaves the other person or you with about 14% health to bail, launch your missiles, or land and repair. This is why after firing off the missiles I recommend immediately following up with your main guns.

Stealth
Unlocked at 2500 points in a Scout Chopper.

"Engine tuning and fuselage coating materials disguise your vehicle's infrared signature, increasing enemy locking and tracking difficulty and decreasing the time you are revealed to the enemy from being spotted."
This is not used by many but is highly effective. I would say instead of 3 seconds to lock on, it takes about 5. I use this in games where there are a lot of people using stingers/iglas and when paired with an ECM jammer, it is VERY hard to lock onto you. This also gives you added time to get out of locking range.

You must login or register to view this content.

Belt Speed
Unlocked at 4400 points in a Scout Chopper

"An enhanced mechanism decreases the minimum time between firing bursts with your main weapon."
Although it says "with your main weapon, It may be mental but i do notice that my Heat Seekers/Guided Missile reload faster than normal. This is especially helpful in Air to Air fights as you can get more missiles off before they can pop flares again.

You must login or register to view this content.

Proximity Scanner
Unlocked at 7000 points in a Scout Chopper

"External sensors detect and reveal enemy units on your minimap. This is active while in any seat of the vehicle."
I do not use this much but if I am playing with friends and riding shotgun, I put this on as even though the range is small, it's one more advantage over the other team.

You must login or register to view this content.

Air Radar
Unlocked at 10000 points in a Scout Chopper

"The range of your minimap increases greatly and reveals all friendly and enemy aircraft."
This is helpful if you are primarily focused on ground attack and are not paying attention to the air. You will see as soon as someone gets in another chopper that it will pop up on radar. Knowing where your enemy is, is a huge advantage.

You must login or register to view this content.

Extinguisher
Unlocked at 14000 points in a Scout Chopper

"A controlled air pressure release in the engine compartment will extinguish engine fires when activated, helping a disabled aircraft return to normal operation and recover from damage"
I do not use this although I have seen some Pros using it. If you can take out an enemy chopper FAST, and barely take damage, this is OK for you, but if you get hit constantly by heat seekers. Use flares or an ECM Jammer.

You must login or register to view this content.

Maintenance
Unlocked at 19000 points in a Scout Chopper.

"Preventative maintenance procedures improve your vehicles recovery from damage."
I don't use this so I can't give any advice on it. Try it out and see if you like it.

You must login or register to view this content.

Guided Missile
Unlocked at 25000 points in a Scout Chopper.

"Guided missiles launched by the pilot which lock on to and track enemy land vehicles and can acquire laser-designated targets even if they are out of line-of-sight."
I use this a lot on Canals due to there being (normally) only one enemy chopper. They take out jeeps in 2-3 hits and disable tanks in 2. They are not as effective as I believe they should be and need a buff, especially since in Rush on Canals, the Tunguska kicks a Little Bird's arse. When used on Conquest on Canals with the other chopper, they are Highly effective against tanks.

You must login or register to view this content.

Below Radar
Unlocked at 32000 points in a Scout Chopper.

"When flying at low altitudes your heat signature is decreased, hiding you from enemy radar and preventing enemy air-to-air missile systems from locking onto you."
This is a permanent upgrade meaning you do not have to equip this to use it. I have to say this is useful after you deploy flares to get away from an enemy chopper. Only problem is, if they are above you, they can hit you with guns.

You must login or register to view this content.

Laser Painter
Unlocked at 40000 points in a Scout Chopper.

"Nose-mounted targeting systems designate an enemy vehicle in your line of sight automatically, painting them as a target for your teammates using laser-guided weapons."
This is good when your team/squad is working with your. Also this will paint choppers if you aim at them. This DOES allow you to lock on with a guided missile and kill them in one shot. BUT. and this is BIG. It, unlike a Javelin, will preform or attempt to preform, a top-down attack. So unless the chopper is moving left, right, forewords, or back, it will hit. Same goes for ground vehicles but all top-down attacks do more damage so I'll let you choose.

You must login or register to view this content.

ECM Jammer
Unlocked at 48000 points in a Scout Choper

"Electronic countermeasures including chaff launchers and deceptive transmitters prevent your aircraft from being locked on to by enemy weapon systems for a short time when activated."
Everyone's opinion is different on this. They were broken when the game first came out but seem to work fine now. This will NOT distract an incoming missile so you must activate it while they are locking on.

I will tell you what I use on these different game modes but do not let this affect what you choose. Also what I use depends on how the game is going.

Canals - Conquest
Stealth/Belt Speed
ECM Jammer
Heat Seekers/Guided Missile

Canals - Rush
Stealth
ECM Jammer
Guided Missile

Damavand - Conquest
Belt Speed
ECM Jammer
Heat Seekers

Damavand - Rush
Stealth
ECM Jammer
Guided Missile until US get choppers. Then I switch to heat seekers.

Great thread! Scout heli's are another vehicle I love to use in Battlefield. A couple of quick questions:

What's the best way to get points up? Currently, I have the Below Radar and am looking to get all the unlocks as fast a possible.

Any tips on making sure you get pilot? It's really annoying spawning on top of the heli or as a passenger when you're trying to get unlocks :(

Any other general tips? :p

Great thread and thanks in advance :y:

It's net necessarily the best way to get points but the easiest to it spawn camp the enemy's chopper (if any). If you get to them quick enough you get 100 points to disable, 50 points to destroy and 100 points per person in the chopper when it blows up.

Another way to get some quick points if you are feeling particularly skilled, is to go on conquest and hover above the flags. If you get a full crew and capture a flag you get something like 200 for a neutralise and 150 for a capture and that will go straight to your chopper if you're sitting in it. It's very high risk as you have to be very close to the ground in order to pull it off and there's usually a lot of obstacles to battle.

In combat, it's best to try and avoid armoured road vehicles. The jeeps aren't so bad to take down but any MGs pack a punch against scouts, not to mention tanks and AA vehicles. The more you use them. The more you get a hang of the HUD. for example, the further away you get from an enemy, the further down the cross-hair you have to go (which of course you will know) but practice makes it a lot easier to know how high/low to aim.

It also makes a hell of a lot of a difference to have at least 1 engineer in the chopper with you.

As far as getting in the choppers quick, you gotta have quick reflexes and a bit of luck. Hitman is the best at that he's forever beating me to choppers. But in a few games I've left the copper there a few seconds and then hit the scout chopper and ended in the pilot seat with it full.

@ "Any tips on making sure you get pilot?"

1) Learn where the chopper is in the deployment menu.
This will help you get the pilot position when the game initially starts, as you'll know exactly how far down you need to go before clicking X. If you wait to read them, you'll be too slow.

2) Learn where the chopper sits in the map.
This will help you get the pilot position when the game is in flow. If you know where the chopper spawns in the map, you will be able to work out where it's located on the mini map (in the deployment menu). Once you work this out, you can wait in the deployment menu for the mini map to flicker and expand (so it covers the area where the empty white chopper icon will appear). When this happens, you can confirm the chopper is about to become a spawn point. You then need to quickly spawn in it, and hope you get pilot.

3) Time the respawn delay.
This will also help you get the pilot position when the game is in flow. It's simple... Work out the time it takes for the chopper to respawn. Combine this with tip 2, and you'll be fully aware it's about to spawn.

4) Don't bother reading them.
As stated in tip 1, if you wait to read them someone else will of already gotten in it.

How can I confirm these tips work? I have 30 hours in the Jets - 17 of which spent in the SU-25TM FROGFOOT. Since there's only the one jet in rush, I had to learn to be the fastest to spawn in (both at the beginning of the game and during).

If every passenger had the flares, the chopper would become too hard to get taken down.

It you're suggesting the passengers should have the capabilities to use the pilot's flares, that'll only end in disaster. Endless trolls and noobs would use them when they're not needed, and leave the pilot defenceless to Head Seeker attacks.

True. Maybe they should give something to the co-pilot. He can't shoot so the most he can do right now is spot. He should have a laser designator or something. To make him feel like hes useful. lol.

In Flames Much?
You have to remember certain PC maps have scout helis
Helis
Tanks and jets on
Winky Winky so any changes would have to make sure you don't un balance that

Good thread
Would have liked to bit more meat and tips behind it but still decent

Looking forward to unlocking laser painter , ECM , Guided
Got a feeling that going to make for a deadly setup

I don't like to give out tips as everyone has their own flying style. It's better to learn as much on your own than to have someone else teach you.
