After roughly thirteen years of running, it was quietly announced in April of 2012 that the website would be archived, but nobody was completely sure whether or not it would continue to do what it was meant to do. After contacting IGN on the matter, it is official that FilePlanet will be stripped of services completely.

“We have decided to archive FilePlanet and will eventually stop operating the site,” Peer Schneider, an IGN publisher told Game Front. “A lot of things have changed over the last decade. A standalone site for downloads of videos, demos, or patches made perfect sense back then, but content delivery is much more integrated now. We believe that the idea of a single-purpose PC download site like FilePlanet is one that, unfortunately, has passed. We decided to deemphasize the site last year and double down on other opportunities. We’ll of course continue to run our beta program and game giveaways through IGN and GameSpy – and we’re thinking of ways to continue to help support the modding communities as well.”

One of the first file hosting websites of it's time, alongside with FileLeech and (now) Game Front, FilePlanet was excitedly launched on May 6th, 1999 by the well-known Gamespy, to serve the popular Quake 2 community at the time. IGN then purchased Gamespy in 2004 and redesigned the website. And finally, near the end of April here in 2012, a banner has/was added atop the FilePlanet homepage hinting the shutdown of the website, stating: "Note: FilePlanet is no longer being updated and is in the process of being archived."

Also, it has been confirmed that there is no crisis involving the employees of the website. You may be thinking: What're they going to do? Well, IGN has stated that all employees have resigned from FilePlanet, and have either went to different projects, or have left earlier in the 2012 year.

Shame really, but they have a point. Most games deliver patches and content over their own server now. Though if memory serves me right this isn't the first time they have closed down. I remember a while back ( few years?) that they has closed the service and ended up bringing it back. Granted this more then likely will not end the same.

As much as I hate to see fileplanet go, it seems inevitable nowadays for sites to die. Be it costs or just not enough attention anymore it seems that the old adage evolve or die is still ever present.

Bye old friend. I used File Planet a lot when it was really popular but now it's obsolete.
