The OUYA console, a hackable Android-based video gaming device, raised more than $3 million on Kickstarter as of Wednesday afternoon, far overshooting the company’s $950,000 goal.

According to a post on Kickstarter’s blog, OUYA was the fastest project to ever reach the million-dollar pledge mark, in 8 hours and 22 minutes. It reached $2,589,687.77 in the first 24 hours, another Kickstarter record.

The project promises to open up the console market to independent game developers by shipping the consoles with the SDK needed for developing on Android. It also has a $99 price point, making it a low barrier to entry. Its proposal has sparked the interest of more than 23,000 backers on Kickstarter.

“To have an idea, share it with the world, and have it resonate is a really amazing experience. Kickstarter gave us an opportunity not only to broadcast the concept of OUYA but to have supporters rally around us and demonstrate–in a very real way–their belief in our mission. It’s phenomenal to have raised $3M in such a quick period. We feel personally committed to every backer and we will make them proud,” said Julie Uhrman, founder and CEO of OUYA.

OUYA has had to dramatically increase the amount of consoles available on its Kickstarter to meet demand. While only 1,000 consoles were available for backers who pledged $95 when the Kickstarter launched Tuesday morning, it has since increased that number to 80,000 consoles available for a $99 pledge. More than 20,000 consoles have been preordered so far.

This is a tidal wave of support for a console that has in impressive cadre of developers touting its need, but it hasn’t released prototype images to the public. OUYA has confirmed that the controller image on the Kickstarter page (and this article) is a rendering, and not a photo of the actually controller. OUYA and hardware developer fuseproject are not releasing those photos.

What do you think of the success of the OUYA console? Discuss Smile

They said the games on it are going to be free...
I highly doubt they'll keep that promise, but at $99 I'm still getting it Cool Man (aka Tustin)

Open source... means its going to essentially be like a CFW PS3 in principle.. more so! Think about it.. if its open source then that means there will be toolsets available for the PC in no time.. everyone making their own mods for games.. or simply making their own games! That alone will probably get Sony and Microsoft to drop their prices! So even if you don't wana drop your PS3 or XBox.. at least when sales of this new console start to go into high numbers.. it will wake Sony and Microsoft up to either updating their systems and producing better stuff or simply reducing costs.. better all round for us gamers! That is of course.. if the machine sells well! Personally.. Im going to buy two of them! One for me and one for my girlfriend Smile
