Post: Battlefield 3 PC Update Will Allow Players To Disable Color Grading

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); An upcoming Battlefield 3 PC client update will likely include an option to disable color grading using a command in the console. This much requested feature has yet to been addressed by DICE, but an employee has revealed what the PC gamers have been waiting to hear.

DICE employee Mikael Kalms stated in a You must login or register to view this content. post that an option would be added to disable the controversial color grading:

There will be a console command for disabling the color grading entirely in the game included with the next PC game client update.

We believe that turning it off gives no major competitive advantage/disadvantage. IRNV scope and a few others which turn the image into greyscale or greenscale don’t work properly without color grading and will look real ugly.

There will be no in-game UI for turning it on/off.

We are unlikely to handle support questions and bug reports regarding stuff that happens when color grading is disabled.

It seems that DICE is likely to add the feature to disable color grading, but will not support users who encounter trouble when using the feature.

Videos have circulated the net from Battlefield 3 enthusiasts who managed to disable color grading by modifying the games files. Temporary and permanent bans have been issued in the past as this is in violation with EA's and DICE's policy. An earlier statement on the Battlelog You must login or register to view this content. by DICE read:

To make sure that everyone on the Battlefield plays multiplayer on equal terms, we also want to make sure that the game files have not been compromised for any reason. For us, a changed game file indicates the user is trying to affect the game to get the upper hand in multiplayer, whether that’s by modifying the graphics or making the game otherwise behave in a manner that is not as designed. We will not differentiate between someone who has modified the game for reasons he thinks are benign and a player doing it to cause grief online.

Players tampering with the game files for any reason need to know that this is against DICE and EA policy and is grounds for banning. Everyone else just needs to know that we will always strive to create a fair online gaming environment.

Color grading is often blamed as the reason for dull Battlefield 3 maps, such as Operation Métro, which features a prominent blue tint. Let us know in the comments if you are excited for the option to disable color grading for PC, and if you would like to see it for console too.

Unfortunately, it will never happen for Battlefield 3 on consoles.

As for Battlefield 4, we can only hope it will support 64 players in the match. This depends on whether it will be a next-gen console title, or if DICE finds a way to support 64 players and not compromise performance.
