This would only happen when you HEX edit something wrong in the save.
Have you been playing around with a HEX editor?
Small mistakes can make your garage empty, inventory empty or in worst case, corrupt your complete save.

Best tip I can give, restore a backup (and don't try to do it yourself)!

I've also managed to get my garage to not show up things anymore, depending on the sorting order.
I just can't remember what exactly I was trying to do back then. It's been a while when I encountered that problem.

Yeah just use your last backup man...
