Later, my brother told me I wasn't suppose to redeem it yet. Is he correct? If so, how would I get a new code?

Besides the code, was there anything else written, like instructions? I don't think it will matter since you did redeem the code on the official BF website. In case something does happen, just email a support person and let them know what happened, and they will most likely send you another code....best help I can help :/

If you redeem it now, it should become available when it is released. And to get a new code, I would call gamestop, tell them your situation, either go in and show them your receipt or tell them the bar code number over the phone and they would tell you what to do. This happened to me, I got one of the halo 4 expansion codes early and it wouldn't let me download anything until it was released to the public :/ kinda sucked but i hope this helps!
