As the title reads, SPOILER ALERT. Please don't read on if you haven't at least gotten to the winter arc of the game.
ENJOY THE WALL OF TEXT
Okay. I want to start by saying I give this game a 10/10. I love it and have played it 4 times over already. What I want to talk about first, is Sarah's death. In the very beginning of the game, you play as Sarah, albeit briefly. At the end of the prologue, Sarah is shot and killed by a reluctant soldier. My first point is, can you think of any other game you have played where they showed a kid get shot and killed? To be honest, I can't. Not only did they show a 12 year old (I think she is 12) get shot and killed on screen, they showed her bleeding out. I'm surprised this hasn't sparked huge controversy (by huge I mean I'm surprised I haven't seen it on the National News yet). I don't know about the rest of you, but I actually cried when that took place. In that 5 or 10 mins you play as Sarah, you can easily get attached. My view on it is, this is a game. Even then, you didn't pull the trigger. Kids have been killed in movies all the time. Why not do it in a game to draw the player in more? That shock value right at the beginning of the game hooks you. I could understand outrage if you had killed Sarah, but the player doesn't.
Now I want to discuss Ellie's actions. Throughout the game, she is shown killing multiple people, and the player even takes control of her as she kills a moose, infected, and eventually, quite a few people. I want to remind you that she is 14. So now, not only has the game shown a kid being killed, but also a kid killing other people. I was honestly surprised when I saw Ellie kill someone, then just dumbfounded when I took control of her and killed people. Again, my view is, its just a game. Anyone who plays a game like this needs to be able to dissociate virtual from reality. If they cannot, they shouldn't be playing The Last of Us.
Finally I want to ask you your thoughts about when you die to a clicker. Maybe you haven't yet, so go save real quick, get yourself chomped on, and load up again so its like it never happened. Basically it chomps down on your corroded artery and blood shoots across Joel's face and squirts outta his neck. That is a pretty graphic death. I thought it was brutal enough with Joel, but then you play as Ellie vs a Clicker. Ellie dies in the same way to one as Joel. Blood shoots across her face and squirts outta her neck. They showed a 14 year old kid, brutally being murdered. I think I have gotten a point across that says this game isn't for the faint of hearted.
I commend them for crossing so many boundaries that other games won't cross, but I also am worried about the public fallout. All it takes is one overprotective parent to see the first few cut-scenes of the game and start a public debate. Although I feel its a video game, its not real, and people need to lighten up, I understand their point of view. Hell the first night of sleep I got after beating the game, I couldn't stop thinking about the game, about Joel and Ellie, about the infected. Lol. I even dreamed about it. Basically what I am saying, is this game leaves a huge impression on whoever plays it, and I feel as though its not a game for everyone. Many parents oppose Grand Theft Auto because you kill cops in it, steal cars, do drugs, and live the life of a criminal. Think about what they could say about The Last of Us.
The game is based off of a horrible pandemic, almost apocalyptic, scenario that no one would ever dream of wishing happened, and I believe many people don't understand that simple fact.
Now that you read it, its pretty obvious I have had this conversation with a few people.
