Explanation:

Light armor is how you rank up past level 20. The blue pieces of light armor max out at 15 light. Once all of your blue armor is at 15 the only way to rank up further is Legendary or Exotic gear. Each upgrade for the blue light armor is worth 1/2 of light, so 2 upgrades will give that armor +1. Legendary upgrades are +1 for each upgrade and max at 25. Exotic I'm not sure about yet but I'm assuming it's the same as legendary, if anyone does let me know.

Tips:

You will start out getting lower light gear, as you rank up you will get higher light gear.

If you have some blue light armor that has 10 light for example, but it is upgraded fully, and you get new armor that has 10, equip the new one because you haven't upgraded it so it has the potential to get more light.

You can also do crucible and strike missions from the playlist and get it, but there is no guarantee from the crucible and the strikes take a little bit to complete so that's why I chose the engram farming.
