Yes its possible, however its only really useful for jailbroken systems for external HDDs. You could store games and various of other content that way. I use a 2 TB ExHDD. Just needed to format it to FAT32.

Personally, I prefer it internal(assuming its a 2.5"), but it will require you to format your new hdd to your ps3.


1. Install the new hdd into your ps3
2. Boot ps3 into recovery mode
3. Select option "restore ps3 system"

This will format the hdd to your ps3 and wipe everything, games, saves, etc.

Once it is finished, you will be brought to a black screen asking for your last syscall(last cfw you had installed)

4. Reinstall your cfw
