Does it give you this error when you sign in or when your scanning for WiFi networks ? Have you tried wired connection?

Try connecting to WiFi by selecting the custom settings. There you get to choose advanced options instead of just automatically scanning and connecting to WiFi.

Have you tried setting up a new connection? If not it may be trying to connect to your friends router/modem.
