Every time i open up a game i cant use use the xmb menu (like the one that makes the background of the game grey or dimmer, and you use to check your friends with). it works fine when im not in a game though. And if i go into recovery mode and rebuild database will i lose my cfw?

No you won't lose your CFW.

If you are ever unsure about losing your CFW, just turn your internet off on the PS3. That way theres no way it can update. Then do whatever it is you are trying to do.
