Do not let it hit ylod. If the console is overheating, be wise when deciding when and how long to run it. Don't expect to put up that much of a fight if the console is already struggling with YLOD.
One of the simple, most effective things you can do is to create a routine of when you clean the inside of the console and renew the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. This goes for computers, laptops, gaming consoles. Generally speaking, everything should be cleaned if you want it to last..
or, you can mod it..
You can create airways (drilling/cutting holes), adding fans or not. The ps3s weren't made with a very effective intake so this is a pretty good idea imo and you can be creative..
One effective way to create an intake on the slims is to cut a hole in the case, right above the stock fan and about the same size..
Or you can watercool it, which nowadays idk if they still sell kits for ps3s, so its possible everything will need to be custom made or at least the waterblock..or you might get lucky to find a universal PC waterblock that can mount the CPU and GPU of the ps3..or at least the GPU..
