Post: how would I go about updating to 3.55 then jailbreaking? :)

I'm fairly new here so any slack that could be offered would be greatly appreciated!
so! pretty much I received an old ylod ps3 off a mates parents and they said i could have it if it could be fixed...it has taken me 2 years to get around to re-flowing it haha.
the system is currently on the following software;
- system software: version 3.15
it still has the ability to install other OS (the option any way).
so back to my original question!
1. how would I go about updating to 3.55
2. how would I then go about jailbreaking the system?
any help would be fantastic!

and done
some easy googling and I was able to do it without advice now to choose a cfw or w/e any suggestions? I have elite cfw atm :alpaca1:

protozo, sounds like you're pretty new to all this so I'll write up a quick guide for you on how to get everything up and running.
1. On your 3.15 PS3 first update it to 3.55 OFW. Sony is no longer keeping these archived so it may be somewhat difficult to find this. If you are unable to you can PM me for it, and I'll get it to you. Just for your own safety you can confirm the md5 of the update pup to make sure it's legit.
2. Once you've updated to that, you'll now what to install your CFW to jailbreak your system. Someone has already mentioned Geohot's, but personally I like rebug. Truthfully Rebug may be a bit much for beginners so I'd suggest Kmeaw's CFW for you. It has peek-and-poke that's compatible with all Backup Managers, and it just overall very stable and robust. You really can't go wrong with this one.
3. After you find Kmeaw's CFW install it, and that's pretty much it. You've now got a jailbroken PS3 that can run homebrew and games via a Backup Manager.
If there's other sorts of functions you're looking out of a jailbroken PS3 ask here, and I'll do my best to answer. This topic could go on for several pages, but this is the most very basic info for you to get started. Good luck!

it sounds like an old consol, if its too old most custom firmwares will brick it.Iif it has 4 usb ports its in the risk zone. if it if reply to this post and ill find a CFW that wont brick it.

You must find the firmware 3.55 (OFW for Original Firmware) on google and use a usb key to update to it.
After, the custom firmware depends on you :
3.55 Kmeaw is my favorite one and works really awesome
3.55 Rogero v3.1 is based on Kmeaw but the PSN is removed/disabled which mean you can't accidently update to v4.11 unless you use a USB Key
If you are looking to play backup, do not use Geohot CFW.
