I don't think it is illegal, you certainly won't get in trouble with the law for it unless you're developing the jailbreak (which I highly doubt you are). Although, if you pirate ps3 games then that is technically illegal.

jailbreaking alone is not illegal. think of what kakarotoks is doing. he is making a jailbreak for use of homebrew and not backup mamnagers. If you download, obtain, or upload pirated ps3 games, then its illegal because that puts you in a different criteria.

but i thought the whole problem with the jailbreak was the threat of getting banned? wasnt that what the geohot suit was trying to get, was to make jailbreaking your ps3 legal, but becuase he lost his suit, it's still technically illegal and they have all rights to ban you? Correct me if im wrong, but please don't flame

yes you face the threat of getting banned. But obviously only if you promote it in some way that gets others to join in a major way. Geohot openly published Sony's keys. Under court order, they were to be removed from public eye until agreements have been made. Additionally, you are right in saying the main purpose was to allow the jailbreaking of ps3's to be legal. But all it really comes down to is piracy and intellectual property. jailbreaking isn't essentially illegal because you can "hack" the ps3 without keys. At least, that is what Sony is trying to protect right now (the keys). It is also garunteed they will change their terms of illegal and legal to be more controlling in the future when we see the latest jailbreak out.

All in all, Sony won't personally hold anything against you on 3.55 unless you figure a way to get 4.11 cfw.

might just be throwing random shit at you, but ya. =0

oh alright thanks. yeah i just wasnt really all that sure about the banning because i kind of left the hacking scene after geohot lost his suit, and i remembered hearing that sony was supposively going to try to ban a bunch of people running the 3.55 cfw, but i kind of guessed it was just an attempt to scare people
