Uh no. Why in the hell would he send someone with 2 post his ps3? Especially with how easy it is.
Find a legit ps3 3.55 CFW put the file you get PS3UPDAT.PUP Make a folder called PS3 on a flashdrive ect inside there make a folder called UPDATE your .pup goes inside the update folder . Update your console via xmb or recovery mode DONE

Go to the website rebug.me and download their 3.55 Custom firmware 3.55.2, In the root of your flash drive Create a folder Called PS3 and inside that folder create another folder called UPDATE, Then Place the update file in that folder (UPDATE). Make sure that the update is called PS3UPDAT.PUP. Remove the usb from your computer and place in ps3. Finally update via xmb -via storage media option.
Also you may need to download Winrar (just google it if you dont have it) - to open the .rar file containing the update.

are you able to get online with the cfw or no

Get the 3.55 OFW on your usb, then put your playstation into recovery mode, go to the 5th one i belive it is.. and itll ask you to put in a OFW of a higher firmware. plug your usb in start the update.. when its done updating then itll be on 3.55 ofw, now get a CFW (PS3UPDATE.PUP) file and put that on your usb n replace the ofw with that now plug that into it and go to update via storage and ittl pop up 3.55-JB and update it... then you can install pkg files.

If you want to jailbreak it first update to OFW 3.55 (Official Firmware) here is a link to it-https://www.mediafire.com/?9d7ih36ur31oq6u
After you update it to 3.55, you can upgrade to your choice of CFW, examples are- Kmeaws, Rogeros (their are a couple versions for this on each updates it adding different things), Rebugs 3.55.2 version is the latest firmware as of now.
Theirs more but these are the most used, if you need any links quote or p.m. me.
Also you cannot go online on 3.55 or any custom firmware, and don't try CFW's above 3.55 (They Are Fake!).
And you do have a working blu ray drive right?
