Check that out. I know it is just the shop firmware... But...

If you previously had FTP file manager or Comgenie's Awesome file manager installed. Surely you would be able to run it on the shop firmware?
Then swap the things you want before going into recovery and reverting back to OFW.

Shop FW does not allowed unsigned CODE period.

If you have any code installed but unsigned the PS3 won't run it no matter how hard you try. It why patchs have to be signed first and moved over to a OFW PS3. If you move that patch without resigning the PS3 just won't run it.
If it was that simple people would have done it by now and also sony not that dumb.
