you can replace your HDD at any time you want.

You will have to format the HDD you put into the PS3 with a firmware off 3.55 OFW or CFW and then decide what your going to do from that.

Either way your answer is simple.

No you will not lose a jailbreak if you do not update past 3.55 when putting a new HDD in.
And yes you will lose what ever was on the HDD you put in to the ps3.
You may lose the things from the 3.55 CFW HDD as well as the ps3 might want to format it again if you put a new one in and then try and swap them over easiest way is to Data Transfer from the 4.30 OFW to the 3.55 CFW by placing a new HDD in the 3.55 before swapping anything. That way you have the 4.30 still with its things on and then when the new HDD is in the 3.55 you will have a fresh HDD to copy everything over to. Unless you want to use the 4.30 HDD in the 3.55 CFW in which case you will probably lose everything on the HDD.

Hope this clears it up for you.

I agree with Gazra if you want to save everything just make sure you have a third hard drive and transfer 3.55 hdd or 4.30 to the third hdd and then data transfer 3.55 hdd to 4.30 and there you can save both of them and switch

no you will not need to update to the latest FW if you DO NOT update by the internet and DO NOT HAVE A DISC IN THE DRIVE. Only use a USB device and you will remain on what firmware it is on at the moment as the firmware has parts installed on the NAND/NOR so it will ask for that firmware.

So have a USB set up like this.

X:/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

X is your USB drive as an example.
PS3UPDAT.PUP <-- make sure it is 3.55 OFW here is a link to download it if you have not got it already.

You must login or register to view this content.

This is the OFW i mirrored the link of all CFW and OFW so that i have a back up of all Smile

To download click on the "BLUE" download button next to "Share with friends" button.

Just remember go to OFW first then CFW don't just jump to CFW first as there is more chance of a brick or semi brick especially if your going to update to CFW 4.21/4.30 remember to dehash and Q/A toggle properly and you should be ok but only go up this route if you have a flasher handy as i would not want to give bad advice and you end up with a system you can't use atm.

Also if you have a flasher make sure to take backups and take a couple and make sure there good dumps before hand. But only if you have a flasher do this part.

I'm pretty sure it says like either the firmware you have or a higher one and if you put the 3.55 pup file it will just restore it back to 3.55. Just make sure you get a 3.55 PUP
